A Point of Obsession... FAE, CO2, and How Much.

Hello again;
So, I was on the hunt to find out how to cheaply measure FAE rates in my new FC. Turns out, there really isn't a cheap way to measure the air exchange rate of a vessel (FC).
The most common way this is done is;
- Fill the vessel with a tracer gas (most commonly SF6 whatever that is).
- Use a detection array inside the vessel to measure the saturation of the tracer gas.
- When there is no tracer gas in the vessel an air exchange has occurred.
- Do some math and BAM! You know the air exchange rate of your vessel.
The normal tracer gas (SF6) and the detection device for it are out of my reach, both in price and permit.
This got me thinking about why we like FAE. My assumption is that we're really trying to get rid of C02. So, I started looking around for C02 measurement devices. I thought I could apply the same principles as long as I could find a decent way to measure CO2 levels. I know I can fill an FC with C02 pretty cheaply, but I'm not sure how safe it is to have a tub full of C02 in my apartment...
That search however brought me to two interesting (to me) things. First, this cheapo CO2 detector. I have one on order, just so I can check out how it works.
Second, is this CO2 scrubber stuff. This stuff seems like it could be useful in a couple of different stages of the cultivation process.
- In the jar. If this stuff could be safely placed at the bottom of a substrate jar it would absorb C02 and by doing that also draw air in to the jar, increasing GE. I need to look into what this stuff is made of, but you could potentially make a pocket of it at the bottom of the jar, perhaps wrapped in coffee filter.
- In the FC, mixed with Perlite. Same principal as the jar, just an added kick to your FAE - also, this stuff turns purple when it is fully saturated with C02 so there is indication of how much C02 is present in your setup.
Sorry if this is TL;DR material. I hope a few of you find it interesting. Anyone have experience with this stuff?
Thanks; /ma

sounds like a solid idea, you could just mix up some baking soda and vinegar in your fc and then watch your co2 meter. Sounds good, I might have to try this to see what my FAE is like
good post man

wow...you have taken obsession to a whole new level. depending on the size of the FC and how many containers you have growing mushrooms you will need to exchange air 1x every 2-3 hours or 10x an hour. as far as i know there is no set formula, you just want as much FAE as possible without lowering your humidity levels. get an ultrasonic humidifier and a coolmist. there's tons of different ways to rig them.
-------------------- please do not take everything i say here so personally. welcome to teh internets!

CO2 gas is real cheap to come by. Stop by your local Stop 'N Rob and pick up some dry ice. Put in a pan of water and watch your CO2 level sky rocket in your FC .
