Mycelium grows slowly

I inoculated several cakes 3 weeks ago and all of them are (almost) completely colonized except for one. Have a look at this picture:

The cake on the left is the one colonizing slowly, the other cakes look like the cake on the right. The back side of the filter box (of the cake on the left) has not been colonized yet. Strangely, the top of this cake has been colonized completely - I find this weird because I did not expect this part to be colonized as it consists of a dry layer of vermiculite. Could anyone explain this to me? And most importantly, why is the mycelium growing much slower than the other cakes?

Is there a chance that the lid wasn't sealed well when you PC'd it? Too much water can cause slow or prevent growth entirely.

From what I can tell in the photo it looks like my second cake looked like when I had a little too much moisture in the substrate. Which can be bad but I kept my temperatures low and it pulled through but really slow colonization. Hope it's not contams, good luck!
Any smell other than earthy mushrooms coming from the jar?
You say it went all the way through the non nutritious layer? Sounds like a bad case of Cobweb..I had this problem during my first grow..
Can you get a better picture of the top?
Last of my opinions but I would probably throw it out or at least quarantine the jar.

Thanks for the replies. I've forgotten the mention an important difference between the cake containing slowly growing mycelium and the other cakes. The weight of the cake I'm having trouble with is about 70% higher than the other cakes! Somehow I've put too much substrate in the filter box. I hope the mycelium will eventually get through the tightly packed substrate.. BTW, here's a new, better picture of the troubled cake:

I don't see any fluffy - or grey stuff, so no contaminations I guess (correct me if I'm wrong!)
So does the weight difference explain the slow growth? Will the mycelium eventually get through the cake?

Oh, and here's another picture of the top of the troubled cake:

No bad smell is coming from this cake.

Well, I had trouble closing the lid. So I decided the attach the lid with aluminium tape as you can see on the pictures. So finally it was sealed very well. I also followed the PF-tek instructions closely, although I probably packed the cake too tightly .:(
