Holes on bottom on FC to drain water out of perlite or keep it in?
    #7702264 - 12/01/07 10:30 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

im trying to figure out whats better, having holes on the bottome of my fruiting chamber so when i mist the perlite to rehydrate it the excess water drains out.

or having a solid bottom so the water stays at the bottom? sorta sounds like asking for contams?

I always left the water in--Put in 2-3 inches of perlite and then add 1-11/2 inches of water. The water evaporates through the perlite increasing your humidity.

But, thats just how I do it , others may say different.

alright, cuz i think its better for the FC im using, but i looked on the bottom an dtheres like a tiny layer on the bottom where water is stil.

before i was doing this i had to mist alot to get condensation on the walls, but after doing this i see a lil condensation around the holes and it makes me think that the humidity is becoming more natural than before i left it drain out

I have no condensation and am having great results...
Condensation on the walls (I could be wrong) are just evidence of the difference in temps between outside the FC and inside...
I just mix a 1" layer of water and perlite and H2O2 and mix all so it's all wet... Then add a thin layer of dry on top.

Condensation is not an indication of high humidity, it just means that there is a temperature difference between the inside and outside causing mositure to condensate on teh walls.

Misting the walls will not increase humidity.

The holes in all sides of the fruiting chamber help air flow around the perlite to aid evaporation.

I dont have any holes in the bottom as i dont have a drill and had to use a knive to make holes which are larger, so i just make 2 rows on each side and it works for me.

Generaly you dont want standing water, rinse your perlite in a strainer and allow excess to drain off.

I recently cleaned my perlite and found i had too much water, since i washed it and drained it properly so i had no standing water for some reason my rh has increased by 1%.

I would say that the holes in the bottom arnt essential but if you have a drill abd a small bit that will give you 1/4" holes then stickt o the shotgun tek and make holes in all 6 sides, as it does work.

The holes also serve the purpose to allow a little FAE ontop of fanning which is an important pinning triger.

I too dont get condensation and im currently maintaining 96% RH which drops a few % when i fan it out. The only time i see condesnation is when i move it into a colder cupboard when it needs to be out of view
