I want to check out Tennessee.. Part of the reason is my grandfather grew up around Maryville and I think it would be cool to see what it's like over there. Another reason is that the more rural areas look incredibly beautiful and filled with great resources (springs, woods, fertile soil) for people interested in self-sufficient living.
I'm wondering if anyone here has experience living in rural Tennessee by themselves / with a small community or at places like The Farm etc.
I've been scoping it out on google earth so i'm somewhat familiar with the geography and place names. Some places that interest me right off the bat are Polk, Grainger, Blount and Pickett counties. Also the area around the Decatur Highway and east of it. I'm particularly interested in the areas close to the eastern / southeastern edges of the state.
It would be cool if some people wrote back with their stories / experiences / impressions of life there. Thanks.

I've only been to TN for Bonnaroo but it seems like an awesome place for simple living if you're not in one of the big cities. My biggest impressions of Tennessee summers: really, really hot by day, really, really cold by night, lots of big bugs. Let us know how your plans go.

I can't say anything about rural Tennessee but I love Chattanooga! Its an awesome city. The aquarium, the minor league baseball stadium right in the middle of town, and good restaurants made it a lot of fun be there.

stay away from middle tennessee, stick to the hills
also, the farm is gay, it's a bunch of old hippies who live off gov't subsidies and social security who think they are doing something great, but they aren't sustainable; the community has fallen apart a few times but always, somehow, gets back on its feet
if you're interested in farms and communal living, check out wwoof.org and look through some of the listings for the area (there's a lot more if you join and pay them for the directory)

something tells me there's plenty of places like that.. i'd like to avoid them.
i have a 2005 wwoof directory.. seems like a good way to experience a place but i definitely don't want to end up as someone's slave.

If you go to Tennessee during spring or summer be sure to check out the Ocoee River, especially the area where the 1996 Olympic Kayaking event was held. Its an awesome place to swim when the dam isn't open.

Live southwest near the border of North Carolina and Georgia because there youll find the Deals Gap and the Tail of the Dragon.
THE best roads to drive/ride on in the entire United States. It's like a motorcycle/sportscar mecca. If youre gonna live near Georgia, though, watch out for that crazy vine/weed invasive species which is taking over the entire landscape.

Burgess Falls. I live nearby.
This one is also nearby:

Middle Tennessee is great for outdoorsy stuff. Lots of great places to hike, paddle, ride and cave.

Been there several times. Gorgeous country. Fall Creek Falls keeps getting bigger and bigger, too. The ranger who runs the park owns a lot of the land to the immediate North as well (and I hope he'll leave it to the park when he dies). And just north of that is the Bridgestone/Firestone Centennial Wilderness. And the state recently bought Lost Creek Cave & Falls just north of Virgin Falls. This area is unique and breathtaking. Scott's Gulf alone has 31 miles of hiking trails. Fall Creek Falls has more. And the place is riddled with one of the greatest concentrations of caves in the world. It's an amazing resource, a real treasure. I'm grateful to live nearby. Everyone freaks out when they go down in there. There's nothing like it anywhere else.
You're a great photographer. I love your shots.

I've lived in western TN my entire life. I can't exactly recommend living here. But then, I've never lived anywhere else so I have no comparison. There are like 10 country music stations here. If you listen to the radio, stay far away.

eastern tennessee is a great place. it's very beautiful, and has some of the best mountains in the country imo. i don't know much about western tennessee, but apparently it sucks.
