something in my computer is fried.
    #7701298 - 11/30/07 11:11 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

this is from my post on it last weekend when it happened:

"i go out to the kitchen to do some dishes, gone maybe 20 mins, come back and my computer is off. i push the power button. nothing. push and hold. nothing. i push it again. it turns on, and all i can see is small stripes up and down, changing direction and color. i thought i was tripping at first..... it does his for about 40-60 seconds and then shuts off again, only this time there was a small "pop" and i smelled burning electronics........ so i opened it up, and a little smoke comes out. now it wont turn on at all. i see no damage inside. no burn marks, no blown capacitors. i see nothing wrong.

i am so pissed. i really dont have the money for another computer. i hope its something that can be fixed for cheap. the damn computer is only like 3 years old. i take care of it well. i cant imagine why this happened. luckily my woman has a laptop. i dont like it. but it gets me online."

well i got a tower from a friend that didnt need it anymore, took the power supply unit from the good computer and swapped the two. it was definately not the power supply that fried. i still see no signs of where the smoke came from or what burnt up. a little more info to add, the green light comes on both PSU's when i plug it in, when i push the power button, both fans kick on and it sounds like it wants to power up, but stops and goes dead after less than a second. green PSU light goes off too. if i push and hold the power button for about 5 seconds, the green light resets back on and the same sequence can be repeated. this is about all i can get it to do.

any other ideas as to a probability of what it might be?

The mobo maybe?

I dont know what it would be with those symptoms. If I were in your shoes I would start swapping all kind of parts to isolate the problem. Not fun I know.

mobo = motherboard? that was what some other people have said too.

well i know for a fact its not the PSU, either of the cd drives or the hard drive, so what does that leave besides the MOBO? i know a little about computers, but im no guru. im actually syrprised i could do what ive done so far without forgetting where something hooked up or mixing up some wires lol.

haha. no. it wont even turn on.

my buddy gave me a tower he wasnt using anymore so i could test out the PSU theory. i took the cd/dvd drives, the ram and my hard drive out of my computer and put it in this one. it works alright, but it sucks, its slow as shit. i had a pentium 4 and this piece of junk only has a 1.2ghz celeron. :crankey:

i really need to fix my other one.

how much do you think a new motherboard will cost me? and can i take the processor off and install it on the new board myself or will i need someone with some experience to do it?

It might be your video card, more likely the motherboard. Check your motherboard for bulging capacitors or black burn marks.

disconnect everything but the power supply from the motherboard. then try powering it on.

this rules out a short in some other component taking the whole system down (unlikely but possible from what i understand).

if it behaves the same way, and i think it probably will, it's the board.

your motherboard is probably a socket 478 type.

not a lot of those left on the market.

I think it might be your power supply, mine died 2 months ago. It started with having to push the power button many time just to start the computer then started smelling a burning electric smell. After couple days of that it finally stopped working it shot a flame out of where the fan is almost caught on fire.

i have to vote for the video card going bad. sounds exactly like what happened to me. new video card fixed it right away. I noticed that chip on my video card had turned black and the heat-sink fell off.

i just had to replace a dead power supply and i learned a simple trick for telling if one is dead.

you can power one on even when it's not connected to the motherboard.

uplug all of the power connections. connect pin 14 to a ground (should be green to any of the blacks) on an ATX 20 pin cable using a wire or paperclip. then plug the power supply in and it should turn on. if there's no fan moving, you probably have a dead power supply.

Try the ram or the video card.

OMG. i feel like the biggest jackass. i never did figure out what was wrong with my computer...... UNTIL today. :nonono:

so ive been getting by on a crappy old computer my buddy gave me, i frankensteined my hard drive and dvd/cd burners into this piece of crap. it works pretty good, but its slow as fuck, i dont even know what speed processor it has, but its SLOOOOWWWW.

so today i decided to take apart my old computer and salvage the parts to sell or trade. luckily i didnt throw out my motherboard(which is what i thought was fried) because i took my graphics card(the only mother fucking thing i didnt check) and put it into this computer and pbbbbtthhhhhhh it wouldnt turn on.

mother fuck. now i have to try and put my old computer back together. im good at taking the shit apart, but man.... i dont know if ill ever get it back together right. :hissyfit:

i have to at least try though. i bought the computer 4 years ago, but it wa a $1100 computer when i got it.

man this blows. im such an idiot, i cant believe i didnt check the graphics card.

Yeah after power supplies, video card is the most likely, they tend to cook themselves easily (see above). You may want to add an extra case fan if you buy a high power one.

Good luck with the repair job :-)

No worries. It's pretty easy to put one back together. The Mobo manual is a good place to start.
