i heard something about some company buying utorrent, a company you wouldn't want to own it, like a company against piracy.

utorrent was bought by the original bittorrent, now it is updated by them, and the problem is who knows what they will do with it, or if they track your downloads or report to authorities...

I know this news is years old and exactly that's why I want to bring it back up again because I'm reinstalling software on my fresh OS and was just about to install uTorrent again until I remembered about them being owned by a questionable corporation. What are you guys using right now?
I've used uTorrent ever since and never had a problem, partially given to the fact that I'm smart about it and deal only in the private spheres, yet I can't shake the feeling now that uTorrent being at v.3.1 is a sketchy piece of software and I'm considering alternatives, preferably open source, to continue peering.

so which build do you think i should get, 2.2, 1.8, or even 1.6 before they were bought out? i'm definitely steering clear of 3.x no doubt about that.

i know it's the best in terms of resource use, aesthetic, and stability. i have always used utorrent for that reason ever since. but what do you make of the whole story surrounding bittorrent inc. and their privacy policy? just rumors?

It's light, no ads, very small program that uses few resources itself. I leave my update on - I guess if you're paranoid you can leave it off, but if you take the time to go into your settings and change a few things around I can't see how you could end up with any problems unless and until that new SOPA (or whatever it's called - internet censorship) law passes.
I know someone who used utorrent and didn't know to limit her upload rate, and she was using her roommates cable modem. She got a cease and desist letter from Comcast threatening to cut off their internet. So I showed her how to limit her upload rate to 25 kbps and now she's a happy pirate once more.
Avast ye maties! Commercials are for shmucks
Edit: Thought I should mention that the advent of torrents has actually caused me to buy MORE films and albums than I would have if it wasn't around. I've heard others say the same. I think that the industry is battling its own interests by trying to ban torrents of commercial material. Even if they do try, it won't ever work. We're way smarter than congress. You'd think they would know that by now. Hello, Anonymous?

Transmission is crap. Use rtorrent on linux.
Using transmission I would always connect to literally 1/10 or less of the peers I do for the same torrent with uTorrent, and my speeds were also consistently ~1/10.

I just got it because I did a fresh install of the OS, and although I don't know anything about the background I can tell you quite confidently that the interface is pure balls. It's got a built-in media player.

I'm generally pretty careful to uncheck boxes, but it's entirely possible.
Either way, it certainly doesn't look good on uTorrent.

When I was using uTorrent I always unchecked "check for new updates" and also allowed encrypted connections or something like that. so nobody's worried? by the way bittorrent inc.'s privacy policy states
Quote:
Notwithstanding any other term of this Privacy Policy, we may release any personal information we obtain or collect when we believe its release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our Site policies, or protect ours or others' rights, property, or safety.
i think i'm done with utorrent. i can't believe this is the underground's favorite client.

It's because, as I said previously, it's FAR AND AWAY the best client. Nothing else out there even remotely compares to resource usage, download speed, UI, etc. It's just the best.
