I have never listened to any Neil Young solo stuff but I do enjoy CSNY. What should I try first? Oh and here is my favorite CSNY song...

"Ohio" is a fucking incredible song. That song was very Rage Against The Machine for it's time. It's still very powerful to this day. I love it.
You should definitely listen to Neil Young's solo stuff if you like CSNY and "Ohio". Just get the greatest hits. It's really good, dude.

There's more to the picture, than meets the eye. Hey, hey, my, my. Rock and Roll can never die!
There's still great rock out there. Trey Anastasio, Ben Harper, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Dave Matthews, RatDog, Red Hot Chili Pepp's, surely many more... Granted many of my nominations are more jazz jam than straight rock, but they have a little bit of everything.

radiohead is already pretty much legendary. there's plenty of great 'rock' bands out there. just open your eyes (and ears).
in fact, i think music these days is far more interesting than the stuff from the 60's and 70's. there's alot more diversity and experimentation. older rock is pretty formulaic for the most part. i'm not saying it's bad or anything, just that it kind of bores me after awhile. something fresh is always being created in the present though. you just have to do some sifting.

all those bands you mentioned are older.. trey and the peppers came out of the 80s. ratdog, well bobby has been at it since the 60s. even dave matthews came out of the early 90s. ben harper is good, but he's not really rock... i mean maybe folkish stuff. burn one down is a great song.

Trey is still composing, material that is not so similar to what he has done in the past. He's fired off two new albums (with two bonus disks) in the past two years! Both of which I find exceptional. RatDog is comprised of many younger musicians and they don't just play Dead covers, they have their own catalogue of new material as well. Rodrigo y Gabriela are a Mexican metal-inspired acoustic guitar duet that can really fire up a crowd and are very new on the scene... as of last year I saw them in a venue that only held 500 people or so, and just last month saw them playing a venue that held four or five times that many - and it was sold out two nights in a row!
The music never stopped!

you are missing the point. those acts arent mainstream nor new. im just saying rock is dead as far as this current generation is concerned

Trey's most recent solo album is really good. It's all instrumental.
Speaking of Neil Young, I wish I would have caught him on his recent tour. He is THE MAN.

I updated the above post with clarification on the group Rodrigo y Gabriela, they are indeed very new, and are growing into the mainstream light with some quickness. As noted, in about a year they are pulling about 8 times as many people to their shows as they did such a short time ago!

I think you're right about rock and roll not being a big part of pop culture but I think that's old news. After the grunge rock thing died down, hip hop and r&b really took the crown in popular music.
I also think the industry surrounding live rock acts has changed dramatically. There is no longer a band that tours as often as the Grateful Dead that can fill a venue like Chicago's Soldier Field (over 60,000 capacity) for multiple nights. Without the Grateful Dead and Phish the big venues like Alpine Valley and Deer Creek are struggling to stay in business. Rather than being a few bands that sell tickets like crazy, there seems to be a greater number of smaller bands that reach modest popularity. I think this is why the idea of the music festival has caught on so well. But really, go to Bonnaroo and try to tell us that rock and roll is dead. It ain't.

Excellent point KC. Kind of dilutive, more musicians with modest crowds, versus fewer musicians with monumental followings. The net interest in music may be quite comparable, but with more choices out there, niche players, and sub-genres, everyone can be a lot more selective about what they listen to and therefore you just can't as easily attract such a huge following. Too much supply for a potentially consistent amount of demand, dilutes each individual band's exposure and attraction.

Lenny Kravitz was wrong, too.
Rock N' Roll ain't dead but it is on life support.

I have seen great rock bands playing clubs in Wichita Kansas, Chicago House of Blues, Portland, St. Louis and many other places.
This one band in Kansas covered everything from Johnny Cash to the Dead, they were wonderful:)
