Separating The Therapeutic Benefits Of Cannabis From Its Mood-altering Side-effects
November 30, 2007 - Science Daily

Scientists from Queen Mary, University of London, have discovered a new way to separate the therapeutic benefits of cannabis from its mood-altering side-effects.

Cannabis contains a chemical called THC, which binds to, and activates, proteins in the brain known as ‘CB1 cannabinoid receptors’. Activating these receptors can relieve pain and prevent epileptic seizures; but it also causes the mood-altering effect experienced by people who use cannabis as a recreational drug.

Now, Professor Maurice Elphick and Dr Michaela Egertová from Queen Mary’s School of Biological and Chemical Sciences may have found a way of separating out the effects of cannabis – a discovery which could lead to the development of new medicines to treat conditions such as epilepsy, obesity and chronic pain. The research is described in the December issue of the journal Molecular Pharmacology.

Working in collaboration with scientists based in the USA*, they have identified a protein that binds to the CB1 receptors in the brain. But unlike THC, this ‘Cannabinoid Receptor Interacting Protein’ or CRIP1a, suppresses the activity of CB1 receptors.

Professor Elphick explains: “Because CRIP1a inhibits the activity of the brain’s cannabinoid receptors, it may be possible to develop drugs that block this interaction, and in turn enhance CB1 activity. This may give patients the pain relief associated with CB1 activity, without the ‘high’ that cannabis users experience.”

Leslie Iversen FRS, Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford and author of The Science of Marijuana, commented on the new findings: “This interesting discovery provides a completely new insight into the regulation of the cannabinoid system in the brain - and could offer a new approach to the discovery of cannabis-based medicines in the future.”

“CB1 Cannabinoid Receptor Activity Is Modulated by the Cannabinoid Receptor Interacting Protein CRIP1a” is published online in the December issue of Molecular Pharmacology.

The Elphick laboratory in the School of Biological & Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary is supported by grants from UK research councils (BBSRC, MRC) and the Wellcome Trust.

How dare people feel pleasure from pain relief. As we all know, it's against the law to have fun.

Next, how about we develop a form of sugar that has all of the calories but tastes terrible? That would be AWESOME!

Why should only cancer patients sneak a 'high' from cannabis?
December 10, 2007 - eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk

THE most relevant question to ask after reading the Advertiser article on Queen Mary college scientists discovering a cannabis 'alternative' is 'why is artificial euphoria, what you call getting high, the only intolerable side-effect in UK medicine and why only with cannabis?'

We can tolerate cardiac arrhythmia and diarrhetic incontinence (from weight loss drugs), liver failure and death (paracetamol), bleeding of the stomach lining (aspirin), normally called an ulcer, as well as addictions to nasal spray after three days and sleep medications available over the counter without prescription.

Add other nasty side-effects, like increased suicide tendencies (among teenagers) with certain anti-depressants, which can be and are tolerated by society and the Law... that's just fine.

One should begin to wonder what exactly the motivation is behind even working on removing the artificial euphoria component from cannabis, given that we use drugs like morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone and others for killing pain both post operative and chronic.

These also cause euphoria, just as cannabis does which is so reviled and hated as a universally recognized threat to all youth, every family, school, business, as well as the very Kingdom itself and its Union Jack... except, strangely, for those who become government ministers.

Did the Advertiser ask if a way was being sought to either separate the euphoria-mechanism from these pharmaceutical painkillers, just as seems to be required of cannabis before it can be used, or else to ban them entirely and jail those who produce, distribute and consume them?

Why should (only) those dying of cancer be able to sneak a 'high'? Pain is, after all, only what the patient says it is.

Why should there be no 'risk of euphoria' consideration for non-cannabis painkillers?

Surely it sends the wrong message to children to have these deadly drugs in widespread use and available at the local apothecary (chemist) placed between the paracetamol (yikes!) and the shaving cream.

You ascribe painkilling properties to cannabis in the article as if there is actually no controversy about this particular property, for which I commend the Advertiser.

But why the special considerations for cannabis?
