The Birth of God

Stardate: 36,000 B.C.

Gnarg: See how much greater we are than the ants? They see us as food or obstacles, but do not truly recognize us. Watch me divert this stream into their colony. Some unknown force (to them) just flooded their village.

Maybe it is the same with us. When violent storms hit us and lightning strikes all around, maybe an enormous being that we cannot see is the cause.

Ulak: If that is true maybe he is angry - perhaps we should attempt to appease him in some way.

Gnarg: Let's offer something of value to see what happens.

*Gnarg & Ulak drag a deer carcass to a rock slab on top of the hill.*

Ulak: Look! The storm is weakening. I think the entity found our sacrifice pleasing. Let us call the entity "God" ('huge' in caveman-speak).

Gnarg to tribe: To prevent future storms we should regularly place sacrifices (sacred objects) on the rock slab (altar) to appease God before he gets angry. Let us sing praise to his power that he might find favor.

Gnarg and Ulak were fierce warriors of great musculature and had the pick of the women, but not so puny Nebul. He had a lowly place in the tribe and no wife. He was clever and good with words, but how could he ever compete? Then one night he had a revelation.

The next day, Nebul asked permission to speak to the tribe and told how God spoke to him and was happy and promised great hunting and much fertility to the tribe. The people asked many questions to which he answered quite convincingly. He became the first intermediary between God and man (priest) and ascending in the hierarchy of the tribe.

And thus religion was born (of ignorance and not any great cosmic connection).

Amen.

Nebul molested the children, right?
