You DON"T want to use vermiculite as a bed. It will make a nasty ass mess and leak through all the holes. Perlite keeps it's shape. You can use LECA, perlite, or lava rocks. With LECA and lava rocks I've seen people leave about 2-3" of water in the bottom of their FC and have bubble wands/stones sitting in it.

And if you put them on top, it doesn't do any good cause what you have then is air pushing down on CO2 which is heavier so it's just keeping the CO2 in you FC. You can put small holes all along the side and in the top for air exchange just don't put holes below the level of the water (duh ) that you're going to have in your FC for your bubble stones. No idea about the Hydrotron. It should say what the hell's in it >.>
Misinformation: Sorry.

All the people who use air pumps in their tanks, I'm thinking of doing this but will not have sitting water on the bottom, just thinking about sticking some airstones in perlite to disburse any CO2 and help FAE and drill holes on the lid. Would this work and would it dry out the perlite if the pump was on 24/7?

my setup is so friggin simple. i buy a big ass clear rubbermaid bin. put a layer of damp perlite on the bottom. then i put in a pint mason jar with a fish tank bubbler in it. the rest is history. if you want you can cut some holes in it..not big ones. maybe quarter sized. i believe that the air being pushed out by the bubbler doesnt really allow for anything to come in through the holes i made, but slowly out.. YEAH maybe some comes in. i leave my shit on 24/7 and ive never had any issues with fruit size or anything. also keep in mind that if you want your pin set to go up you need to find a way to compensate for the clear bin.

It doesn't matter what comes in through the holes. Fruiting chambers need not be sterile. You can fruit mushrooms in an open room if you have enough humidity. I drill hundreds of small holes in my fruiting chambers. High humidity and good air exchange are the keys to a successful fruiting environment. To repeat, a fruiting chamber does not need to be sterile. RR

Sorry about that. I did mine shotgun style like in the videos so I never really thought about it. Guess I'm still thinking on the macro scale instead of micro. Small holes == less contam right? Joking. Would it better if the FC was sterile? I have seen people have issues with trichoderma infestations. Or is it really just overkill?
