Silversoul said: Yes, unfortunately there seems to have been a great discrepancy between the ideals that Jefferson put forth in the Revolution, and what he did as president. I think he must have been rather embarrassed by his presidency, and I've heard that his grave does not list his presidency among his achievements.
When I was reading about that, I had a great sense that he really regretted his actions, but I'm sure he learned quite a bit from it, especially concerning the importance of his ideals. These other nations might have been imposing upon our liberty to trade and remain neutral, but his actions imposed upon our liberty - it wasn't the solution. It was a great test of his ideals, and he failed to effectively live up to them, although there might not have been an easy way. Anyways, a great lesson.

fiat money is not necessarily bad.
in fact it allows for economic expansion when controlled properly; without being able to intelligently grow M-1, you would not be able to sustain high growth.

Free trade is ideal when it benefits the whole population. The problem with free trade under the current regime is that much of the wealth it brings gets concentrated in land values, ensuring that the rich get richer, while the poor see little if any of that economic growth. Henry George was a strong advocate of free trade, but only under a system like he proposed where the land value would be shared among the populace, ensuring that the economic growth would benefit the whole country, and not just the top 10%.
I wish more people would look and see the problems that are putting all the wealth and power into a minority's hands. It's not free trade. It's global industrialism and monopolies. When you put that much power into a small minority, what do you expect except corruption? Our lifestyles affect the economy, for better or for worse. It is a good principle to adhere to technologically minimalist standards or near minimal and increase spending in local markets. I see it as a direct contradiction to desire both. Our money should be put into local businesses and communities, not cutthroat industrialists and economies in far away distant lands. That's if I really cared about the american economy. As it is, keep on giving them your money america, it will lead you to your doom, and rightly so.

I disagree with many about what acts will increase our power, however.

Exactly! The neo-cons think that excessive interventionism will increase our power. I disagree. I think that interventionism wastes resources and breeds enmity which results in us wasting even more resources (look to Rome for an example of this). Isolationism allows us to conserve resources and build our strength.

Midnight Eastern Standard time tonight. After that...no orgasms either manually, sexually, or dream-induced.
I'm going to whack it about 3 or 4 times in the next hour and a half to prepare.
