Perlite Hanging Ball
    #7691999 - 11/28/07 06:39 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

So shroomies like to grow where humidity is at its best..hence quite a few people see pinning on the bottom of there cakes, low, closer to the Perlite where humidity is at its highest..

sooo... get in the festive spirit of the upcoming holiday with the hanging perlite ball!

hang this full of perlite in your FC!

i believe it should increase humidy esp. with its 360 degrees of perlite exposure

what do you guys think?

I thought the reason most people see growth from the bottom was because when they birth the cakes, they birth them upside down..

I'd say more perlite = more humidity so it wouldn't hurt I guess, specially if there are too many cakes sitting on top of the perlite on the bottom, preventing it from releasing moisture, then it would actually help.

More surface area = more humidity, hence the reason the perlite is spread across the bottom of the fruiting chamber. Balling up your perlite will not adequately release the moisture into the air. On the other hand, it may help you raise your RH a little... give you a bump, so to speak.

It is damn festive.

It won't hurt, that's for sure. Mushrooms often pin on the bottoms of cakes because the moisture from above runs to the bottom due to gravity. That's why it's a good idea to pile up a tablespoon or two of verm on top of a cake and keep that soaked. It makes sort of a moisture reservoir up on top of the cake.

hmm if gravity forces water/vapor down..wouldn't the perlite above really help up, considering the vapor will move down toward the cakes?
or is it just a minor impact

If you have room to have something like that hanging in your fc, and your having problems with humidity, then your fc is too tall. The more volume of open air you have, the more difficult it is to keep your humidity up.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.
