invitro side-pinning
    #7690795 - 11/28/07 02:18 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm getting a bit of invitro side-pinning. The top verm blanket is pretty deep and I haven't blacked out the sides so the pins are forming there. However they're getting pretty crushed, should I slit open the entire thing and just have it sitting down with no bag around it? I've already slit the top so the bag doesn't go above the verm layer. There is a wet verm layer beneath a dry verm layer [for contam barrier]. As you can see in the photos, the entire thing is opened up for FAE.

My intention is to, once more pins form, slice open the mycobag and take it away except at the very bottom as a bed/mat. I might dunk and roll the entire thing again [having already dunked it in the bag for an hour a day ago] to give it a verm layer of protection, but I'm worried that if I muck around now I'll stall or contam it.

You can probably just cut out around the fruits to free them. Leaving the bag in place helps to slow down moisture loss.

That's a good idea. How big should I leave the pins before I cut a slit next to them? Will it affect their growth or the pinning of the mycelium around it if I open it up too early?

Well, I cut a slit above every little pin I could find. I damaged a few of them, but couldn't be helped. Hopefully the targeted FAE while retaining moisture should help them grow into some decent big shrooms, relative to the potential productivity of an uncased WBS spawnbag.

Quick grower, just thought I'd keep people updated with my first shroom ever. Would I be correct in guessing that this is Penis Envy?

It's a drunk penis envy with a little too many insecurities

And that's excess vermiculite I took off the top [I had originally put on too deep a casing layer] and chucked on the bottom of the tub.

That's still a very small shroom, it'll grow bigger. If it doesn't I'm up shit creek.
