More likely the power supply.

Even more likely is a fan not spinning or a dirty heat sink. When a power supply dies, it usually dies completely.

99% chance it's a heat problem.  Was it just built?  Thermal paste might be missing from CPU heatsink.  Or the powersupply is not strong enough to handle the computer.

If it's an old PC, do what Seuss suggested and check inside the PC while it's on.  A can of air will do wonders to heatsinks/fans.  Just be sure to do it outside, or with a vacuum running beside it.

its an older pc and basically what happens is that it makes a continuous high pitch noise i would say beeping but its not acutally beeping, freezes up and completely shuts off. it just started this last week. i can start it back up if i wait a few minutes afterwards, but if i try to start it up again immediately it shuts right off without booting up. at first i thought it might be a bad power supply, but it can power back up eventually.

i think you guys are right about it being a heat problem though. the fan is prob either not working at times or just not doing a good enough job. the comp has survived alot of shit, it went through my apt burning down and being salvaged out of a smokey wet environment. the might just need to be replaced as there was a ton of dirt and stuff in the inside that i had sprayed out, but im sure i didnt get it all.

as for the ram i just wasnt sure because it is rd-ram and i had upgrade it some months ago, knowing that the comp will not work with any empty slot i just wasnt sure if the new ram i have might be faulty causing it to shut off. i'll check out the fan though.

thanks everybody for the help

Check the fan on the CPU heatsink to make certain that it spins freely. Could be something as simple as a wire rubbing against the fan blades.

My last PC had a similar problem. I would turn it on, and after booting windows, it just turned off, but no noises or beeps. After trying to diagnose it, it would stay on shorter and shorter, untill it would power up, and turn right back off.

Ended up that the plug from the PS to the MB melted, and shorted...
