i learned from just reading and studying as much information as i could find, along with hundreds of hours searching fields and forests and mulched gardens.....everywhere.altho i am not claiming to be that knowledgeable.but i know enough to be safe.
i have many books,my first psilocybe mushroom guide i got was actually from my father!!hehe

Most mushroom id books only have a couple pages of Psilocybe mushrooms on them, they really are just a small minority when you look at the big picture. Take up mycology as a hobby, they'll be proud of you! (just don't tell them of your specialty..)

I kind of agree with captain max... but really you should get yourself a good, solid book like stamets' "psilocybin mushrooms of the world".
it's an indespensible resource for beginning hunters and seasoned vets alike. color pix, good intro, conprehensive coverage of almost all psilocybes, paneoli, and even the deadly galerinas..
hide it if you must. but as of yet there are no REALLY great online ID guides - - nothing I would rcommend, anyway.

good luck.

The president of our mycological society in this state once asked me: "What is the difference between a cat and a dog?" If you think about it, not much. They both have hair, homeothermic, fangs, uh....basic skeletal structure..etc..etc.etc..He then said:"But when you look at a cat you know that its not a dog, right?" Well, sure...but...

The point I am making is that so many of these guides give you descriptions that could apply to so many different fungi. The best way to learn is to find someone that knows these things first-hand. Join your local mycological society, often there is a chap or two willing to share such knowledge. Hopefully, unlike me, you live in a state where hunting such fungi is productive.

Get learned and good luck!
