Atheist quote

“I would like to show more respect to peoples' sincerely held beliefs, but unfortunately that would violate my own sincerely held belief that religion is a filthy lie and a threat to civilization.”
I tend to agree, though I am only aggressive about religion on this forum and not in 'real-life'.

For those who think religion is so dangerous, I have a question: Would you support a government ban on all religions? After all, if something is so dangerous as to be the cause of all the wars in history(or so I keep hearing), then surely it must be treated as a threat just as anthrax or nuclear weapons are. If you support freedom of religion, explain why.

I respect anyone's belief who doens't try and force it on me or my culture.

I support freedom of religion. YOU can believe and act however YOU want. I just don't like religious training for children, religion in public schools, religion in the court system or religion being pushed on the poor and needy, who are "prime targets" due to their situation.
And a ban on religion in general would be pointless. A ban on "public religion" or "preaching in public" would work for me.

Absolutely not. It is not about control or suppression, but about the teaching of critical thinking skills.
As there are some 10,000 or possibly many more, religions/sects in the world; most all of which view the world in contradictory ways because there is no evidenciary basis for such beliefs; merely cultural ones.

OrgoneConclusion, what do you think is the underlying cause for modern mans desire to believe in magic?

I think all, or at least most, religions are founded as a path towards the mystical experience.
There are certain similarities to be found in almost every set of spiritual teachings in existence- primarily the oneness of everything and the necessary erosion of self love (or the ego). A true (or greater) Jihad means overcoming one's love for oneself, not any form of violence or hate, in the same way Buddhists focus on overcoming the idea of any kind of self or existence outside of experience.
Religion is not fundamentally good or bad any more than a blade of grass is selfish or greedy- it's just another path through which people express the ignorant, negative side of themselves. Banning religion wouldn't change this.
Religion, or at least spirituality, can be an extremely beautiful thing, or amongst the most ugly of things. In general, the negative side of religion only manifests itself when members of any given sect start to view all outsiders as inferior, or even evil. Religion is meant to be a path to enlightenment, not ignorance and war- people just use it as an excuse to unleash their own obsession and stupidity. It's a matter of the nature of lots of humans being flawed, not religion in itself being a bad thing.
Personally, I think the Buddhist concept (and experience) of the Clear Light is preferable to the idea of a creator God, as it makes clear that what is being sought is not something substantial, but experience and enlightenment, not submission to an omnipotent father figure, but that's just me. You'll find genuinely spiritual people and utter fools in any given sect.
