Anyone in the medical field? I'm wondering(I have access to both) which would you prefer to try to use as a LC 5%dextrose in water or 5%dextrose in normal saline? I can get 500cc IV bags of either or both.

I beleive you could attach a self-healing medical innoc port to the IV bag quite easily

My question is which would be better? the water or the normal saline? I'm going to noc' it up in sterile medical specimen containers. I'll use an I.V. line to fill the containers.

I really doubt using saline would work. My guess is that the salt content would inhibit any growth. Distilled H20 would be the best bet imo

Normal saline is 0.9% salt, it's what our bodies are made of, just thought it might cross over to fungi as well? Where's RR?

The concentrations of salts in saline is maybe a tad too high. We had a discussion on this a few days ago here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7673494#7673494
And the study mentioned that concentrations of salts of 1% already inhibited growth of yeast a bit.
I myself still think that addition of salt in very small proportions, equivalent to the amount contained in Karo (0.1%) is necessary/important but it is obvious that big amounts have negative effects. The reason that I think it is necessary is because if the mycelia is growing the new cells will also need salt and have to get it from somewhere.
If you can get more than one bag I suggest you make an experiment.
Get 3 bags, 1 saline+ dextrose and 2 dextrose.
Add 0.1 % wt/vol of salt dissolved in a little bit of water to one of the dextrose bags.
Then inoculate all 3 and see which ones work the best.

yes.... But for all the work qt jars with whatman filters & self healing injection ports seem soo much easier if you want to go the expensive rout

Nibin good idea, I can get them all day long, as many as I want. I think I'm gonna' follow through with something to that effect. I can get bags that already have injection ports, and gas exchange ports. But I'm not sure exactly how I'm gonna' put all this together just yet. I think I got my question about the saline vs water answered though. Thnx for everyones input.

Just buy 3 meathooks and hang them in your closet, lol.
Or make the hooks out of heavy gauge wire.
