can anybody venture a guess as to what might be wrong with the lower mushroom in this picture? there's no red cap part and it's all wrinkled and ugly looking. but it is growing. i've got a number on this cake coming out like this...

thanks in advance for any help.

if you are misting the pins directly, that could cause it. there is only one that looks weird, the other two look normal.

Are they also very tough, and look like they may be cracking? Try injecting some water directly into the substrate where the mycelium can drink it up.
I have had very dry, tough mushrooms growing, and injecting the substrate with water fixed them right up. After having done this, I began injecting water regularly, even if they look healthy enough already. Since using this injection technique, I have had some marvelous flushes. They love it. Don't bother with dunking.

is there a tek on doing this? or is it just self explanatory? how much water do you inject in a half pint cake, and how often?

err don't inject your cakes >.> that's one way to create tunnels for contams to take down to the center of your cakes if you don't push them deep in there yourself doing the injection
just dunk em
what exactly is so ugly about them?
that one looks like it's going to be the biggest one in that pic
growing so much so quickly hurts go ahead and expect atleast a 1 or 2 ugly ass mushrooms per project if not per flush especially in the big ones they taste the same!

i don't knoww what's so ugly about it. just how the cap is brown, and it's not uniformly plump like the others... it gets all thin and wrinkly near the cap.
but anyways, thanks for the advice. i guess i'll just leave em and see how they turn out.

Well I've never gotten a contamination doing this. Mycelium seems to be able to hold it's own. And, needless to say, you would be injecting sterilized water.
And, in my experience, dunking for 24 hours doesn't hydrate your substrate nearly as well as injections. The colony can distribute the water much better when injected right into the center.
This is, of course, the method I've adopted based on my experience. Try different techniques to find what works best for you.
