Extreme Heat Mistake - What Are My Odds?
    #7687774 - 11/27/07 07:31 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have an FC in a large pantry with a space heater placed on another shelf. In the past, it's provided enough heat to keep our incubation shelf at a level 80 degrees. The FC stays around 65-67 degrees, which isn't too dangerous, but it slows growth (right? lol). I got greedy and tried to place it on the same shelf as the FC but on the other end of the pantry.

With some experimentation I got the heat to peak in the high 80's (in the FC) for about 5 minutes, then level out and stay there for a few (4-6) hours before dropping down to the lower 70's and the heater kicks back in again. I figured the high temps (sub-90's) wouldn't be too bad on the cakes as long as they didn't STAY that temp.

All this was done when the heater was set at a certain level. Apparently within the last couple of days, the level was turned up a little. So being greedy again, I moved the heater down to the FC level before I went to bed. In the morning, my roommate woke up before me, checked on the shrooms while the heater was running and the temp read "somewhere around 110". When I asked for specifics, he couldn't remember. He promptly moved the heater away and fanned out the FC, as well as sprayed the cakes/FC (they're rolled in verm). The million dollar question is, are they toast??? I know mycelium starts dying at around 106F, right? I'm keeping hope!

PS: They've been around 65-67 all day long today and so far there is no noticible damage on the non-pinning cakes (all but one), but on my cake that has been pinning/growing, one of the mushrooms has split a little on the cap (but the veil isn't broken). Should I just pick it now or let it "grow out"? Sorry for all the questions, just concerned about my babies! :-)

Thanks Again!

let grow and quit messing around with your set up

--------------------
Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

they're prolly alright

i've had mushies grow from a crumbled cake left in a parked car's trunk for a week xD
temps prolly around 110-120F+

just make sure they're hydrated!

Thanks for the positive (and quick!) replies. I'll see if I can't get a pic or two up on that one pin that has 'split'. I'll wait a couple days and let it grow.

As far as messing with the setup, we just added another FC on that shelf so there won't be room for my bad ideas. lol Temps seemed to have climbed a degree or two just because there's less airspace on the shelf, so I think our setup is pretty much 100% automatic. :-)

when your shrooms split, it's a natural reaction to dry air

make sure your RH is correct and that pin will prolly just be an ugly mushroom
