problems with oysters... PLEASE HELP!
    #7687284 - 11/27/07 05:48 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I am fairly new to cultivation of edibles, but not to psych's (as most on this forum probably are). I have succeeded in fruiting oysters one time before on sawdust and grain cakes, 50/50, and I have started trying to expand to other more proven methods. I have started 3 different spawn runs, one is straight sawdust (oak), another is WBS, and the last is sawdust and aspen shavings, all three are in plastic bags, but this has only led me to three problems...

the most frustrating problem is with the sawdust and aspen shavings, which is actually an expansion from just sawdust spawn.
the mycelium seemed to be rockin' and rollin' on the sawdust but the areas where it has grown to the aspen shavings (i didnt really mix very throroughly) it has just stopped growing and nothing has happened for about a week.

another problem is with a fully colonized sawdust bag that i put out to fruit about 5 weeks ago in a terrarium with perlite and an air pump and about 4-6 fresh air exchanges a day. it started to grow large "knots" all over it after about 2 weeks, but eventually they stalled and started getting thinner and thinner. today I decided to try to transfer this to an outside garden because conditions seem about right here in north central texas (50-60 at night, 60-70 during the day). When I started crumbling the "cake" out of the bag to put in the casing setup in the garden I realized that there was absolutely NO mycelial growth on the inside of the cake, only about the outside 1/4 inch had any mycelium at all!????

by the way, hello and thank you to all the valuable members of the shroomery, the information contained on this sight has been of limitless value to me in my past cultivation.

I have included some pics of my past psych' mushroom cakes. they arent the most beautiful of what i have grown, but the only ones i had a camera available to take pictures.

You can use pf tek with oysters direct, or by substituting sawdust for the vermiculite. You'll want to do that or use grains to expand the mycelium, and then use the grains to inoculate your bulk substrate. Aspen shavings, or any shavings won't work too well. They're to thin to support much mycelium, and the distance between them is too great. Use sawdust and chips in combination. You can also use straw. I'd recommend a straw log for oysters. One thing to remember, oysters need lots more air exchange than cubensis. They're extremely CO2 intolerant.

thanks for the answer to the problem with the shavings I guess I though that aspen might work since it is a species of hardwood (right?) *shrug*, but I guess all of the empty space doesn't give the mycelium much momentum. and I am going to eventually use a straw log after my other grain expansions colonize. but it still boggles my mind as to why the mycelium seemingly died on the inside of one of the grow bags when a few weeks before it was a very healthy and fully colonized substrate, and I found absolutely no signs of contamination and it still had the pleasant mushroom-y smell.
