2 FC Questions

I was searching and couldnt find anything about these subjects. First is, I was watching RR's video and was wondering about the holes drilled on the bottom of the FC. Wouldn't water leak out of these holes underneath the FC? Also, what is the size limit for a perlite FC. I was reading something about bigger perlite FC's not being so affective.

No. That's what the perlite is for. And before you ask, perlite DOES come out, but very little and only when you move it a lot. Otherwise 1/4" holes are primo.

Can anyone help me out with the 2nd question? Just wanted to know the size limit for a perlite FC?

What kind of size are you looking at? There is a probably a size point at which a Martha would be more cost effective.
My gut feeling is it would scale up. I think you'd need a propotional amount of perlite to the volume of the container. I'd estimate about 1/5 the volume of the container.

That's smaller than the one I have working nicely. It might be a little on the short side at 12"
Just did some measuring and my 1/5 estimate is out. Mine is 17" deep and I have about 6" of perlite in there and it works a treat, which is about a third.
I'd probably go for 4" depth of perlite. That gives 8" for cakes(?) + fruits...which might be a bit tight.
As much perlite as you can get in there so you still have enough room to grow.

So wait. You're saying that it might not be deep enough? That would really suck.

I recon you will just about get away with it. How tall are your cakes? How tall are the shrooms gonna grow of the top of the cakes?
That said I recon it'll work. If one grows a bit tall you can always dig it a little foil lined pit in the perlite!!!!

you could use a tub that is just 1/4th inch taller then the cakes. it will be really eay to keep the rh up high enough. BUt any mushrooms that form will hit the top.
