Eating raw eggs.

I can't always get a protein shake or eat chicken after a long workout, but I've heard from so many sources and I've heard 50/50 that it's a bad idea to down raw eggs and others say it's an incredible source of protein. Can someone shed some light?

From all that I know coming from both the bodybuilding side, and the natural health side, which is a good amount, it's one of those high risk/high reward issues. I personally couldn't handle it, but I know a few of these "warrior diet" folks and they all look great. But again, I can't eat raw eggs, 10 seconds a side steaks etc. But again, they do look amazing.
I am NOT encouraging anyone to do this.
Why no protein drink?? that's as easy as it gets. I love hemp powder in soy milk after a workout. Very natural, loaded with the goods...

That's what we eat, can you expound on what you may know about them being safer? I KNOW they're healthier, not to mention a couple million times better tasting, but I'm still a little freaked by the raw egg deal.

ive beem eating 4-6 raw eggs a day for nearly 3 years. as long as they are from cage free, organic, healthy chickens, you have no problems.

Interesting. I imagine that as a raw food, they must be loaded with all the goods.
As a side note, it was a trip the first time we ate "real"eggs at the age of 27. Thick brown shell, heavy, and GREAT taste. Just great.

according to the USDA, 1 in about every 30,000 eggs is contaminated with salmonella.
also, brown eggs are no more nutritious than white ones. they aren't bread.
go for it. it's good protein.

I've been thinkin about that. I've never seen white free range eggs, and I've never seen mass produced brown eggs.
Whats the story??

the color of the egg is determined by the breed of chicken, but as far as nutrition, there's no impact. it's mainly cultural preference and image that you see the colors you do.
americans are just used to eating white eggs, so that's what they buy, and that's what producers produce. there is a (false) perception that brown eggs are more natural or wholesome, so most producers who work the market segment that prefers that (people who buy free range and/or organic eggs) go with brown egg breeds.

another thing.... 'free range' for egg-laying chickens is not legally defined in the US. it's a marketing term. the conditions faced by a 'free range' egg chicken may not be any better than those producing eggs for a business that does not use that term.
i'm not really up on which producers use bona-fide cruelty-free methods, but if anyone does know, i'm interested.

From what I've read... cilantro has some amazing benefits as far as pulling metal toxins from the body.. and also kills salmonella and many other parasites. Some guy postulated that this is why mexicans who, mostly eat a ton a cilantro in their diet.. don't get montezumo's revenge and such sicknesses. It's when tourists come down, drink the water that has different organisms from where they are from, and then dont balance it with the proper nutrition.. get violently sick.
Cilantro.

the 1 in 30K statistic is mostly concerning the nutrient lacking eggs produced in mass quantitites by cramped, antibiotic and hormone fed chickens who live in their own filth. aka the cheap eggs.
i assure you, this is not the same for free range organic eggs.
one way to be sure that you dont eat a bad egg, is to stick it in a bowl of water, if it sinks its good, if it floats, its bad.
and you are correct, there is no difference between white and brown eggs. the difference is in their diet and their living conditions. i raised chickens for a few years, and i can tell you without a doubt, my organic free range chickens that ate mostly bugs and organic grain, produced the best tasting eggs ive ever had. yolks were BRIGHT yellow, almost luminescent compared to store bought.

This has been a GREAT post. Nutrition, T Rex, brown vs white
I get eggs here in my small town from a lady who raises chickens on a farm and brings them in. I have not encountered any eggs like this from a store (Whole foods, wild oats, etc)
These babies are awesome. I didn't eat eggs for over two years and when I started lifting again, I figured I'd give these a try, and man o man

Thanks for all of the responses, they were VERY helpful. I guess my only concern is: I'm trying to lose weight, and slim down, not build up just yet. I know protein is essential in ending a workout but I don't want it to make me huge, will it do that? I see all the protein bars in stores and stuff like that and it's always accompanied by a picture of some big huge ass buff dude... It's confusing!

Getting huge is a LOT harder than it's sold. I could go on forever....
Anyway, I highly recommend hemp protein. It tastes VERY neutral (which is important) has a ton of goods in it (It's hemp!!) It dissolves well in water, doesn't give ya gas, etc and so on.
Check it out.

I'm not sure how reliable their test methods are, but a magazine called "Mother Earth News" tested free-range eggs from a dozen or so different farms and the averages they came up with showed an incredible jump in health and nutrition from commercial eggs. Here's a link:
http://www.motherearthnews.com/Whole-Foods-and-Cooking/2007-10-01/Tests-Reveal-Healthier-Eggs.aspx
leftysurprise - do you notice any difference in ease of digestion with raw eggs or the mental & physical effects compared to cooked eggs?

Bump! Can anyone confirm the health of free range eggs? or add to it? From the data retrieved it seems like free range eggs are incredibly healthier than their commercial raised counterparts...if everyone knew this it would be very nice!
