Mushroom tea

I was under the impression that applying significant amounts of heat to shrooms causes them to be less potent. Because making tea requires boiling water, are dried mushrooms "immune" to heat, or do they lose potency in the tea brewing process?

yes, heat does destroy the psilocybin if you over cook the shrooms. a lot of peole make that mistake. i did, before i knew better. what you want to do is grind up the shrooms in a coffee grinder, or at least dice them up really fine. make tea as you normally would. stronger flavors are better. when you remove the tea bags, add your shroom powder. flavoring with honey helps. try to finish your tea in 5 or 10 minutes, and swirl the cup as you drink so you don't end up with a pile of sludge at the bottom. there are easier ways, though. if you put your powder on a folded piece of paper, you can funnel it right into your mouth and chase it down with OJ or cranberry juice or something. you don't have to chew it at all, so if you're quick you barely taste it.

I think using fresh mushrooms are better for making tea. In fresh mushrooms their is more psilocybin - 1 psilocybin breaks down into 2 psilocin. I assume that that happens not only when the mushroom is dried, but also when heat is applied, so it less chemical breakdown would occure. Lots of people also say that heat really doent break down the magic chemicals in mushrooms THAT much... its less of a deal then everyone makes it out to be. I think heat for extended periods of time such as days or extream heat. Its not a big deal if you just let the mushrooms simmer in water - not boil. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Last night I was reading a recipe for chocolate mushroom bars. And it said to not heat the shrooms over 170'F because it kills the psyclobin. I wondered if that may be why when I make tea it is not that potent.

Tea in this sense is just infused water, the heat speeds the infusion but is unnecessary, room temp water will eventually absorb all the soluble alkaloids so if you find your hot tea seems weak try cooling it down.

No need to boil the mushrooms, bring the water to a near boil, turn off the heat and if you are using a tea bag for flavor steep for 2-3min then pull it out and if you are adding lemon do it now before adding your fungi.... steep and strain. It will have cooled down significantly but still captured all the magic.

I just run the kettle. Dice shrooms and put into mason jar. Fill jars 3/4 with hot water. Put the lid on and shake gently every few minutes after 20 minutes strain tea and add desired flavour. I like berry tea plus mint or lemon tea.
Usually add another cup of water to the shrooms and drain after an hour in case I feel like I need a little more.

I like that idea. I have some lids with strainers from growing broccoli sprouts i could probably use.
I always end up with very little water.

Whoever wrote that has no idea what they are talking about. Psilocybin melting point is over 200c. You could not possibly get water or chocolate hot enough to damage it.

This post is from 20 years ago. I believe this debate was settled some 10 or 15 years ago. The consensus was that some degradation of pslocybin starts at 250F (121C) degrees. Which is why people, for decades, have been making tea in boiling/simmering water for 15-30 minutes without any loss in potency. Psilocybin is water soluble and water boils at 212F (100C).

So am I getting all the actives into my tea? Or have I been leaving goodies behind?

Difficult to say. Psilocybin is highly soluble in hot water... so maybe.

I've heard that psilocybin is relatively stable and won't break down due to temps from boiling water. RR posted a while back that he would grill fresh cubensis before eating and not notice potency issues.

How do fresh shrooms taste. Are they as nasty as dry? Cuz I love the grocery store mushrooms.
A small stir fry loaded with magic mushrooms would be a fantastic way to start a trip.

Taste is subjective man. Loads of people start off not minding the taste and end up hating it though. I don't mind em much but I wouldn't put them on pizza. They weird. Shrooms be weird.

I didn't mind the taste of fresh shrooms at all. Dried shrooms make me gag right now just thinking about them.

No loss of potency; even, if you put them in boiled water. Just don't leave it boiling. Make 2 cups of hot water. Grind mushrooms and put them in tea bag and leave in hot/boiled water for 10 minutes while you drink that put the same tea bag in the second cup. Drink that in 30 minutes (i break the tea bag in the second cup but many don't drink the mushroom material).

Every other poster agreed with you, you can heat the mushrooms up to a boil and any degradation would be from sustained raising temperatures. One poster went as far to reference RogerRabbit talking about BBQing cubensis.

It is generally accepted that exposing psilocybin-containing mushrooms to high temperatures, such as boiling water, can cause the degradation of psilocybin, which is the primary psychoactive compound in these mushrooms. This means that there is a risk that the potency of the mushrooms may be reduced if they are boiled or heated for an extended period.
However, the extent to which heat affects the potency of mushrooms in tea can vary depending on several factors, including the type of mushroom, the preparation method, and the brewing time. Some people suggest that using lower temperatures and shorter brewing times, such as steeping the mushrooms in hot (but not boiling) water for several minutes, may help to minimize the loss of potency.
It's also worth noting that the effects of consuming psilocybin-containing mushrooms can vary significantly from person to person, and can be influenced by factors such as dosage, mindset, and setting. As such, it's important to approach the use of these mushrooms with caution, and to take steps to ensure that you are consuming them safely and responsibly.

Jayne, did you just parrot a book or a website? Should have tried to parrot better info.
You can boil, cook, fry, etc. Without any kind of noticeable potency loss. If it was so generally accepted that heat degrades the actives then why do we dehydrate our fruit to dry?
Bad info

thanks, you were quicker. this bad info keeps coming back like a boomerang m
boiling water does NOT damage a thing. boil them for an hour if you want, i simmer mine for 10-15 minutes.
psilocybine degrades through oxidation, thats why we dry them as hot and quick as possible to the point that they are bone dry, and ideally vaccuum seal them.

People wanna feel valued/ included, even if it's ill-guided
And the buck doesn't start or stop with the internet IMO. That's why striving to learn through personal experience and critical thinking are so valuable.
Used to be diehard tea-head (especially with Libs, very stringy boys to eat dry) but I now get a LOT of mileage out of Lemon-Tek (w/sludge consumption, as little liquid as possible, no strain just knock it back then chase it and grimace for a few mins. WELL worth the 'discomfort') and sometimes LemonTek with a bunch of 0.5's capsulated and munched up for extended duration.
Something to think about.
Cheers!

This thread has run it's course, imo. Bumping and ressurrecting a 20 year old post rarely produces any positive results. This was resolved years ago and many tens of thousands of people routinely make psilocybin tea in boiling water over the past few decades. If there are a few people who still want to believe that boiling mushrooms for tea reduces the potency by a small amount, just pop in an additional 0.025 grams and bob's your uncle.
This thread has been closed. Reason: 20 year old post.
