Does perlite need much surface area to maintain humidity?

So say you made a couple of extra little trays in case one or two went bad, but none did, and now your fruiting chamber (Rubbermaid tub with small holes drilled all around and perlite filling the bottom 4") is completely covered with trays (hypothetically 1 big one and 4 small ones). There isn't even enough room on the perlite to lay a small hygrometer down there, could that affect the humidity being supplied by the perlite?
On a similar note, is misting too much in compensation of this possible drop in humidity something one must watch out for... that is to say is it easy to mist too much?

YES! and YES!..
the water needs to evaporate.. in your case its doing that and then condensing on the bottom of the tray and precipitating back in to the perlite.
Misting too much can be a problem.. especially during pinning...

No pins yet, just whisps of white starting to poke through the casing.
So probably better off splitting up the trays into two different chambers instead of packing them all into one?

I'd recommend to remove the trays, then rake your fingers through the perlite to fluff it back up. Set small blocks or pieces of pvc on the perlite to hold the trays elevated. You could also build a wire rack for the trays to sit on. However, keep up plenty of air exchange even with the holes, as normally the substrate trays evaporate enough to maintain pretty good humidity. RR

I like that idea a lot. Don't know why I didn't think of it.
