Casings in Incubator?
    #7684936 - 11/27/07 08:25 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I read in a post where RR said not to put casings in an incubator. I live in a relatively cold place where its floats around 60 degrees or below. I was wondering should i keep my casings in an incubator? or just leave it out?

well it all depends on the situation at hand...winter is coming and if it gets cold in your home you may consider it..
questions to ask to help you determine if incubation is needed would be things like

Q: "does it get below 60F in your home at night?"
A: if it gets below 60F i would consider the following.

Q: "what sort of containers are your casings in? aluminum? plastic?"
A: aluminum baking pans are probably the worst because the mycelium degrades them..
also myc produces heat all by itself,
the metal will have a natural cooling or heating effect on the myc..
plastic is a decent heat/cold insulator and does not degrade..

Q:"how many casings trays will i have in close proximity of each other?"
A1: if you have only a few casings in aluminum pans and the temp inside your home drops below 60F its safe to say you could use an incubator.

A2: if you have many casings in aluminum or even plastic trays and ambient temps inside don't drop below 60 you may be fine placing them all in a large rubber made container as they will generate their own heat fairly well

A3: if you have only a few casings in plastic trays putting them inside a rubber made container should allow them to keep the heat they produce themselves.
