    #767925 - 07/22/02 02:18 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

hey i was wondering if any1 out there has really tried using permiculite instead of vermiculite and actually gotten any succesfull results. many ppl say u cannot use it with the pf jars but i dont see why not. in the mushroom cultivation faq it says that hypothetically it should work so will it produce any shrooms whatsoever?

If you mean perlite, don't use it in the BRF mix. Use it to line the bottom of your fruiting chamber.

It does not have the same properties as vermiculite. Vermiculite tends to absorb moisture, perlite on the other hand "pushes" water away. This is why perlite is so great for wicking water into your growth chamber and vermiculite is so great for keeping moisture in your cakes.

Do a search, I think somebody round here had good results recently using perlite instead of verm.

Good luck

to your question yes it will grow shrooms but will them be big and will it be alot NO.
perlite extracts water and mushrooms need water. Thats what makes them so big and thats why you need to add moisture when they dry out. All the perlite is going to do is kill your population in mushrooms and size in mushrooms. On the other hand vermiculite is what you want. It's not what you NEED it's what you WANT. have a good day.
