Is Checking To Much Bad?
    #7683334 - 11/26/07 08:14 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

First time grower here wanting to know if opening my incubator every day is a bad thing? My thermometer is inside the incubator and I like to keep an eye on the temperature. Also like to check the jars. Yes I have a dry verm layer. Have any of you had a bad experience from checking to much? Also does anyone else on here own cats? I was wondering about the risk of contams due to cat hair and dander as well.

It is probably not bad since the sub temp will not rapidly drop just by looking.

Why dont you just wait three days and once you look at them you will be even more excited

Now now, you don't have to go that far. The world is never quite as funny without weed.

Personally I usually wait two days or so before checking. But once a day shouldn't cause you any problems.

Every time you check a colonizing substrate, you are increasing the chances that infection will take place. The simple disturbance of the air surrounding the jars (or trays, if bulk) creates turbulence, which can spread airborne spores and bacteria.

If you're checking on a tray by opening the covering, you are disturbing the CO2 that has built up in the tray, and providing fresh air. This can be a pinning trigger to the mycelium, possibly causing it to stop or slow colonization.

USUALLY the chances of checking causing inefection is pretty low - but if it's excessive, you can cause problems.

I have 2 cats and one dog. During incubating, my cats ended up actually pulling the towel off the tub a couple of times.

I had 22 out of 24 jars colonize and are fruiting right now.

So, assuming you keep your pets out of that area as much as possible and keep it clean, you shouldn't have any trouble.

the desire to check all the time goes away when your quarts of grain colonize in less than 10 days.

all i've heard about cats is that they will get in your stuff, curious little bastards. one mushroom snack though and they might learn their lesson.

I was that way too. I checked my jars everyday! I knew that looking at them won't make them colonize faster. So, instead of looking at them every 24 hours, I'd make it 36 hours! Ha, not much, but I'm anxious to see them fruit for my first grow.

I have 2 cats, and I've had all 40 of my PF tek jars fully colonize without any contams (yet). I'm just about to put them in the FC so we'll see how that goes. As for checking them, yeah, I was doing every day too.
