How to be a noobie-two-shoes and mess up your two different monotubs ( moisture )
    #7682987 - 11/26/07 06:35 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

1)  Make your substrate too wet.  To the point at which condensation forms on the monotub roof and drips down on your substrate, becomes half colonized and warm, and is assaulted by a 5" spot of green mold.

(Apparently, the squeeze test was done with a squeeze that was too gentle....about the strength that would be used to shake the hand of a 40 year old woman.  Yeah, that's the only way to describe it.)

2)  Make your substrate too dry.  Don't realize it until it's too late and you're through the first pinning initiation and you get barely any pins/supersmall mushies.

Refill your monotub by dumping a cup of water down the side.  This will only hydrate the bottom, and pins form there, coming up from the bottom of the tub, because only the bottom portion of the block is saturated.  Remember, they come up from the sides because your noob self didn't put a trashbag around the block, it shrunk, and light hit the sides.  You will get barely any pins on the 2nd flush from the top, because you were a naiive noob and didn't just fill the damn thing above the block!  LOL

3) Be impatient!  Take your tubs out of the closet 5-10 times before they are fully colonized.  Remember, your polyfil holes weren't sealed perfectly, the mycelium saw light as well, and prematurely fruited.  You may not notice it until it's too late, when colonization is "finished" in your mind.  This will throw off fruiting and pinsets and won't let you case which generally sucks.

Don't do it!

Life is one big road with lots of signs,
So when you're ridin' through the ruts,
Don't you complicate your mind.

Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy
Don't bury your thoughts,
Put your vision to reality, yeah!
