San Pedro and the cold
    #7677175 - 11/25/07 10:38 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I have a san pedro cactus thats about a foot tall at the bottom of my stairs under a fluorescent light. I don't really do anything to it, just very infrequent waterings (haven't even done one yet) cause of the cold weather. The problem is, my lights are right at the bottom of the stairs and the cactus gets a cold draft every time the door opens. Could the draft make it sick? It looks fine now but I know they can take some time to show problems. The only other place I have with lights is right near my heater and I heard that natural gas stunts their growth so I'm afraid to put it there. Will a cold draft now and then bother my cactus so much (I'm in Canada so it's pretty cold) or should I put it near my gas heater or just leave it on a window sill somewhere until summer? Any help is appreciated, I don't have too much plant experience under my belt and I would hate to lose something special like this.

a draft won't cause a problem, it only has problems when the water inside the cactus (since it holds so much) starts to freeze, and a draft wouldn't be able to freeze it...

peace

id leave it on a windowsill to go dormant until the weather warms up next year, i dont think u will get good growth using flouros personally (depending on the size of the plant of course)
if it were a seedling then flourescents would be enough to maintain decent growth...

Indeed it will get stunted if left somewhere where gas is burnt. But maybe if it´s just for the winter it will be ok.

The flouros seem to be working fine. When I bought it it was all hard at the top and this summer a 6 inch column shot out of it. I put it outside in the summer time when I knew I'd remember to put it back inside. Raccoons constantly fuck up my backyard.
