Best way to harvest
    #7680831 - 11/26/07 07:54 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

What is the best way to harvest mushrooms?

1. hold the mushroom to the ground as close as possible and pull them out while twisting them.
2. cut mushroom at its base with sterile scalpel

?????

Definitely number one

Number 2 will get messy very quickly.

Its best to remove the mushroom by gently twisting it holding it from the base, so that you remove all of themushroom tissie. Any tissue that remains on the cake will rot.

I doubt seriously cakes will be in the 'ground'. I prefer cutting the stem just above the soil so as not to damage the mycelium below. I've seen many patches damaged by people pulling the mushrooms up and out of the ground.

Thats a very good point, misread the post slightly. Partially due to this being the cultivation forum  lol

Would the same technique be applied to harvesting from cased bulk substrates for indoor cultivations? I had thought that cutting the fruit near the base/vulva opened up a contaminate vector by way of rot?

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

If you are hunting outdoor, cut

If it is an indoor cultivation, pull out carefully.
