What is the best way to harvest mushrooms?
1. hold the mushroom to the ground as close as possible and pull them out while twisting them. 2. cut mushroom at its base with sterile scalpel

Its best to remove the mushroom by gently twisting it holding it from the base, so that you remove all of themushroom tissie. Any tissue that remains on the cake will rot.

I doubt seriously cakes will be in the 'ground'. I prefer cutting the stem just above the soil so as not to damage the mycelium below. I've seen many patches damaged by people pulling the mushrooms up and out of the ground. RR

Would the same technique be applied to harvesting from cased bulk substrates for indoor cultivations? I had thought that cutting the fruit near the base/vulva opened up a contaminate vector by way of rot?

If you are hunting outdoor, cut
If it is an indoor cultivation, pull out carefully.
