i would like someone to show me a lc to coir work. coir may have nutrition but not enough to support colonization or fruit on its own. i have tried numerous times with it barely growing in clumps then just fading out once the carbs from the lc are gone. spawning to coir works because of the nutrition from the spawn.

Bikerfool said: SO you're saying that the ideal moisture content of coir is NO dripping when squeezed? I've never heard anyone say that. It would have been good to know since I just had to throw out 12 trays. The moisture content was "field capacity" I guess that may have been my problem. Too wet. How long does your coir take to colonize Sillycybin?
That's been my experience, correct. If I squeeze it as hard as I possibly can, I like to see no more than a maximum of 2 drops of water. Anything more slows colonization by quite a bit (increasing chance of failure) and if it's excessive beyond that, bacterial bloom will sprout, accompanied by the smell of rotten fruit.
Note that I also use Glad Press-N-Seal to cover my trays (with some slits for gas exchange) so not much moisture escapes since the sides of the trays are sealed nearly air tight. If your tray covering allows more moisture loss, you may have to adjust your methods slightly.
Either way, I've found that it's almost always better to err on the side of under-moist than over-moist.

this had been my conclusion about coir aswell
perhaps you guys should start measuring how much water you're adding to the coir, so when you get it working it won't be a mystery again
i chose to use cow poo and straw vs coir for my bulk grows, and so far all are working
the reason i chose not to get coir was because i was told that coir was mostly just something to fluff up the substrate being just yummy enough to be considered an additive
you don't want to use poo on small scale and the same as you don't want to use coir on small scale
not trying to get down on any experimenting i'm just trying to say, don't put too much stock in a coir grow
you can get 50lbs of cow poo for under 3$
