just enough for a snack
    #7680670 - 11/26/07 06:00 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Found these today hanging out next to a tree. Initially I only spotted the big one above the leaves like an oddly shaped goose egg. Feel bad for pulling up all of them, pins and all. But hey, it was either me, the slugs, or squirrels.
I win.
Sorry the picture isn't in situ. I didn't have my camera with me.

Anyone have the luxury of eating these? Any ideas on preparation? I think I'll just fry them up with some garlic, soy sauce, and onions with some rice on the side.

Man, i must be a weirdo. Taking pictures of my food before eating it.
Takes "playing with your food" to a whole new level.

Oh well, the season is almost over. The hunting thread is slowing down. Thought I'd contribute something.

Here are a couple more to enjoy...before I do.

Mushrooms make for such great (photo)subject matter.

These are Coprinopsis atramentaria. Beautiful pictures.

As I am sure you are aware, if you eat these and drink alcohol within a few days you will suffer a very uncomfortable formaldehyde buildup.

And if you are still considering eating it, there is also that little issue with testicular lesions to think about as you chow down.

Hm. Did you think those were Coprinus comatus????

I wouldn't eat what you found, nooo.

GGreatOne234, No, I knew they were C. atramentaria. You gotta give me some credit. They look nothing alike.:smirk::wink:
I actually find that these are far superior in texture and flavor. (slightly asparagus tasting, but very subtle. The stipes have a nice crunchy, fibrous, but not chewy rubbery texture.) Even the black bits tasted fine, maybe slightly mushier.
I appreciate the concern though, thanks a lot.

Heres my observation...In most texts the edible/inedible feature has more to do with personal tastes and opinions. It can be rather subjective. This of course is in exception of poisonous species. Does anyone agree that texts will be more willing to list a species as inedible or downgrade a mushroom from "edible and tasty" or "edible-good" to just edible(or even inedible) when it is a "controversial" species regardless of inherent edibility? Am I just splitting hairs here?
Another example...I actually find the Giant polypore delicious and meaty(before it oxidizes and turns black, then it smells funny). Most people find it inedible, including my wife who is repulsed by it. So, just cook and eat immediately after picking right?

The only time I have witnessed the opposite occurrence is with pluteus salicinus being listed as edible in Rogers mushrooms. (Though there seems to be both a bluing and non bluing one. I'm sure he just needs to update.)

Alan, to be honest, I wasn't aware of the testicular issue.
I couldn't access your link(they didn't like my cookies setting). So,  I did some reading.
This excerpt came from you a couple months ago...

"Sixty days after termination of treatment with benzcoprine most seminiferous tubules contained only occasional spermatogonia and the testicular weight was markedly decreased."
"In dogs, oral administration of benzcoprine for 1 month..."

These animals were exposed to benzcoprine(synthetic) and coprine(did they even test with coprine?) repeatedly and for extended periods of time. I imagine they dosed at several levels. Ranging from very low to high. Now I'm not sure how much coprine a single C. atramentarius contain, but I imagine that eating these twice or three times per year would cause minimal if any damage at all.
Knowing that I won't be consuming this mushroom more than a few times in a year actually makes the event a bit more special. It makes finding and eating them more unique. I guess its actually sort of the same feeling that fungi hunting and eating gives in general. We humans can find a way to ritualize everything we do. We're such silly animals.

Oh yeah, its acetaldehyde, not formaldehyde isn't it?

I'm going out tomorrow night. I wonder if I'll be able to drink without an immediate hangover. Guess there is only one way to find out.
Why use beagles and rats, when you have idiots like me to test mushrooms? Kidding...kind of...
