Mixing strains?
    #7680625 - 11/26/07 05:19 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

so i got some new syringes. knocked up some jars and 2 weeks later still didnt see any growth.
i assumed the syringes were duds, and against my best judgment decided to use some of my old LC to knock 1/2 of them up again... without re-PCing them.
went out of town for the holidays and when i returned, they all have growth.
the original ones are barely moving, obviously the syringes were very weak and it just took a long time.
but now i have 6 jars that are 1/2 multispore of either mexican albino / Plantasia and 1/2 Creeper LC

so what will happen, will they grow together or will one dominate the other? will this slow it down even more?

They will grow seperately or one will dominate. Could go either way. Not sure about slowing down, doubt it.

I'm not sure about the 'domination' thing ...?

I remember a previous, similar post and RR chimed in with an answer .... if I weren't so lazy, I'd look it up.

I did a WBS spawn grow with various strains and in the end got sick of my silly, tweaky 'keep everything segregated' thing .... and for my last monotub mixed 3 strains of WBS spawn together and mixed with HPoo and everything worked out well. .... really didn't notice if one dominated or they all mixed ?

whatever strains they were, they are all the same species, which is more important, I have accidnetly mixed spawn of different strains before, and noticed not one bit of difference.

It will all mix up. The only thing is that you will have a more varied genetics.

As jeetered said, they are all the same species.

If you mix a poodle and a labrador you don't get a dog with bits of poodle and bits of labrador, you get a labradoodle. Lol

I suggest you do a search, Enothe

A good start:

The jury is out on whether they will "mix" or patch together.  According to Roger it doesn't seem all that important anyway

************ STOP THE MISINFORMATION!!! **************

Listen to Jeeterd and Nibin..

Mixing STRAINS is like mixing BREEDS in dogs.. works great..
you can actually come up with a new "breed" (or strain) take albino penis envy for example.

Mixing different SPECIES like Cubes and Liberty caps as an example.. the different SPECIES will fight or fruit separately.

a cube is a cube, just like a dog is a dog.. some cubes are great danes, some pit bulls, some poodles.. but they can all interbreed..

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

so are you guys really suggesting that shrooms could be bred like dogs?

you can take certain dogs with certain traits and mix them and sort through the offspring to get your perfect dog

could you do something like this with mushrooms? mix certain strains of potent ones to sort out an uber potent substrain?

like could you take two clones of your best mushies of different strains and mix them to get even better mushrooms?
if that were the case, couldn't you clone your new one again and continue doing this?

Normally a cake is allowed to completely colonize, then another injection is made into that cake with a different strain. Then if there is a fruit resembling the desired traits, that fruit is then isolated, and the procedure repeated, consistantly isolating the desired traits from both strains. Check out some of the advanced mycology posts. Thats where I have been learning more about this. It is amazing stuff really.

The albino penis envy was not done by casually throwing two strains of mycelium into a container. Lets not spread misinformation of triviality here, the process was far more involving than that.

Isolating is what breeding is. You isolate a characteristic you want and try and reproduce it for multiple generations

about mixing a labrador and a poodle is a bad example. you dont only get a labradoodle. some offspring will be labrador dominate some will be poodle dominate and some will be somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. this is one of the major issues with amature cannabis breeders. back to topic, when you mix spores the different spores need to germinate next to each other and bond before breeding could happen. chances are not in your favor as spores are most likely clumped together so most wont mix with the other strain. with a lc and spores they definetly wont mix.

Unfortunately, creating new strains is NOT as easy as this. It requires a lot of time and energy, so would you stop saying the whole "a cube is a cube" thing, and saying you will get a hybrid. You may get some of each strain when you fruit, but you won't be getting any mixes.

Why all the opinion/personal theory presented in this thread as fact? It is entirely possible and practical to breed dikaryons. One does not need monokaryotic mycelium, although that's also a possibility. If you folks are talking about cubensis here, 'strains' will readily cross with each other. It might take a few tries to find compatible hyphae, but then again compare the number of isolates from a single strain that develop compared to the number of spores injected into the media. Not all spores germinate, and not all are compatible with each other, but hyphae from the same species are generally compatible, and when they're crossed they're not hybrids in my opinion, but simply crosses.

i would agree. not a true "hybrid".. that would be an inter-species cross. this is simply a mixing of varieties. even the word "strain" is used rather liberally by us hobbiests.
