just installed Linux Mint
    #7680622 - 11/26/07 05:16 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I installed Linux mint with the new KDE 4 beta, last night. Let me tell you, as a long time KDE user, the new KDE is great. Linux Mint also has a few inovations that make it very friendly to newcomers. And after using it for a night, I would definitely recommend it over a vanilla ubuntu install. Mint is built on top of ubuntu, but has all the codecs and restricted drivers installed by default.

This first screenshot is after I tinkered with the default KDE look (we all know the default KDE look is always terrible.) All I did was move the bar to the top and make it transparent:

The first thing you notice is the new menu. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the suse menu by now. It takes that to the next level:

My favorite new program, so far, is Dolphin. It has replaced konqueror as the system browser:

If you look at thr right panel in this next picture, you can see that I have clicked on a picture. It brings up options like on-the-fly format conversion, encryption, compression, etc:

In this pic, I have selected a mp3 file. The right pane displays the ID tags for the song and lists a few options such as append to music player playlist, send to cd burning software, email, compress, etc:

As with all other debian based distros, you have access to apt for cli and synaptic for gui package handling. They have also created a web based installation system, and it works quite well. Under your menu, there is a program called MintInstall. Once you click on it, it asks if you want to search for a package or just go to the repository. So i clicked go to repository:

Browsed to the Graphics section:

Clicked "Install Now":

It downloaded the package"

And installed it:

This distro is very friendly to newcomers. There is no need to hunt down mp3 or video codecs. They all come with it out of the box. If you have been thinking of making the switch, may I suggest Linux Mint.

Could I get a copy of Christopher Walken reading Edgar Allen Poe?

I'd love to play that when my roomates are sleeping.

i wouldnt think so, but it isnt a proble with mint. it is that KDE uses more resources. you would need the xfce edition of any distro. or find a fluxbox edition, but for new linux users, i suggest xfce for older computers.

Well i would say that ubuntu is the half retarded, drunken and disabled father on welfare that somehow fathered the complete genius and total succcess in life that is mint.

i ended up formatting my hard drive and now i use mint exclusively and i partitioned 20 GB of my total for xp so i can play games....really my only complaint. no game support.

but yeah, its basically ubuntu with everything you wish it did and in a cooler skin. its more smooth running, has all the things you need already, and really doesnt have nay restrictions.

i HIGHLY recommend it.

o.O

well for one, ubuntu doesnt come with all the codecs you need to see anything on the internet. Mint does. you can watch youtube right off the cd. in ubuntu, you have to type in commands to get stuff to install. mint has its own installer. There were things that ubuntu didnt do because it wasnt allowed or something. mint has it all.

almost 2 weeks in and i dont notice it, which is nice for a change. i never had to hunt down codecs or extra repositories. everything just kinda works how it should, out of the metaphorical box.

also, i got the dvd image of it because it comes with the new kde4, which i am really diggin.
