Psilocybe caerulescens - Colima, Mexico
    #7680380 - 11/26/07 01:17 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

This place was really neat. It is a river bed near a large volcano.

It was much warmer and more humid here than it was in Jalisco, we were surrounded by jungle instead of forest. The mushrooms were found right in the interface between the sandy river bed and the jungle. No mushrooms at all were found inside jungle, it does not support them. The jungle is really noisy, its the relentless sound of ten thousand bees at once. Debris falls out of the jungle into the river and become buried in the sand, and this is the substrate for these mushrooms. Psilocybe caerulescens has very unusual habitat - it only likes to grow out in the open in the middle of the sand, right where the water would flow if the river wasn't underground at this point.

Very few mushrooms grow in this environment - Half the fungi was Psilocybe caerulescens, the other half was tiny Agaricus, Psathyrella and other mushrooms that enjoy harsh habitats.

The first mushroom we found was a lone Psilocybe zapotecorum. This was the only specimen of this species that we found in Colima:

Psilocybe caerulescens:

At this point we had been there an hour and it got very dark. I was very surprised that we were able to find the way back.

On the left there is Psilocybe caerulescens, in the middle P. zapotecorum and on the right P. villarrealiae. The mushrooms on the map are in the locations where they were found.

We went back the next morning and took some more pictures of the cluster.

Here are a few more choices, all Psilocybe caerulescens.

This one has veil remnants around the margin of the cap and a pruinose stipe which has floccose mycelium remnants on the bottom fifth.

It is really unique how these mushrooms like to grow way out in the middle of the sand.

Pins start out a walnut color.

And become plane in age with an a distinct umbo, sometimes with blackish or greenish tinges near the center.

This shows the translucent-striate margin well.

This is where we stopped for lunch.

Today I got an 8 gig sd memory card for my camera.

My guess is a fungus, but it could easily be a plant or lichen.

Sorry to bump such an old thread.

I've heard that the caerulescens is know by the natives down in Mexico as the "landslide" mushroom. They say that the mushrooms usually appear after a landslide. They also say that the trip is a landslide, if that makes any sense. My friend who went down there and was given some to eat said that the trip felt like a landslide in that it took you form zero to infinite in no time. In other words, it was an instant peak with no come-up. This could have been placebo because of the name but he claimed that these were the most potent exotics he'd ever eaten.

Has anybody else ever heard of this mushroom being called the landslide mushroom?

There are many active Psilocybe species in Mexico that prefer disturbed grounds.

Sometimes there are signs on the road that say landslide zone.  (zona de derrumbes)

When they say that, they aren't kidding.

We went looking in 2008 and it was really crazy and dangerous and after a couple hours we found two interesting patches of bluing derrumbes in Jalisco.

I took a ton of pictures but I have not posted them yet.  They like the humid areas where there are many biting insects!

Derrumbes seem to be a mexican thing, I haven't seen anything like it in landslides in the US.

Its kind of hard to know what we found, they have small thin walled spores and interestingly shaped cystidia.    I sent 19 samples to Workman but were taken by customs.

I have some of them! They grow near a volcano here in Costa Rica, I took a piece of soil with some mushrooms and I'm trying to clone them, does anyone have any idea on how to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Psilocybe caerulescens has not been recorded from Costa Rica, so your find is interesting and important.  Do you have any pictures?  Any dried material?

They aren't hard to grow.  To clone them you should tear open a cap and use a needle to put an extremely small amount of tissue on to agar.  A few people have grown caerulescens here and information on how they did it is in the cultivation forums.

Hi Alan! I have some pictures from the ones that I took, right now they are not as big as in your pictures, and they are a little harm because of the transportation :frown: , but I have found some as big as yours in the volcano! Check this:

I can tell you that they have grown a bit in 3 days now, I hope they reproduce in that soil, but i'm also going to clone when I have a decent-sized cap

One of the most interesting things about this mushrooms is that they only grow in a small grass plain and not in the rest of the volcano, actually I don't know if they grow anywhere else in Costa Rica. They were gone and we couldn't find anymore in this spot since two years ago, and last week a lot of small caps start growing all over the place!! We are really excited, as this mushies are a lot more potent/teaching, also I have found that Maria Sabina used them in their rituals so that gives them a lot more of excitement and mystic.

Let me know what you think!
