I am only days away from full colonization of my 12 BRF jars. I am planning on spawning some jars to coir and casing that with the 50/50+. I am planning on putting the rest of the jars in a 6-sided terrarium with perlite. I am just not sure how many jars I should use for spawning and then casing. Also, after I mix my spawn with the coir, do I put it back in the incubator? Once all the coir is colonized will this be a solid block like the cakes came out? Do I break up the colonized coir to put in the casing?

I'm a newbie, but I'm having fantastic success using Hpoo pans. I bought these 1lb aluminum loaf pans from wal-mart they have fitted clear plastic lids-they'rrrre great, they hold in moisture but allow gas exchange. I used 1 PF jar per 2 Hpoo pan and they are growing like mad. I just started casing tonight, 4 pans 50/50(they went back into the IC till I see growth sprout through then to FC), tomorrow I'll case 4 pans with MGMC. I haven't had the opportunity to use CC, but I would argue Hpoo is better anyday. I said it I'll stand on it! PM me.

yes it needs to go back in the incubator after you mix it with the coir, the coir needs to be colonized by the mycelium before you put the casing layer on top and put it at 76F and 100% RH.

OK, the coir doesn't need to be sterilized but the casing layer does, correct? Also, once the coir is fully colonized, do I only put a casing layer on the top and not the bottom? Finally, when I add coir to my cakes, do I crumble the cakes or would it be better to slice them?

Neither of the substrate or casing layer needs to be sterilized, just pastuerized.
You only put the casing layer on top.
Personal preference, some say that breaking things up hurts the mycelium and will take longer to grow back, but then again, if you cut in slices you are still damaging it somewhat (not as much) but you have less spawning points.

Coir is to be pasteurized not sterilized.
Casing layer should be sterilized and non nutritious. Apply cooled casing directly over the top of the coir lightly. do not pack it down. Make sure it is completely covered. then allow a few days to see if it grows through the casing. patch any over growth then fruit.
The cakes can be crumbled, sliced, diced, food processed or whole. Smaller is better because it allows for more inoculation points throughout the coir thus speeding the incubation time.
Hope that helps.

Why do you say it should be sterilized? Everything I have read says that casing layers are to be pastuerized... MM's casing teks for example: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5669077/an/0/page/0

I have done it both ways and had success with both. If you want to pasteurize, then do so. I only sterilize non nutritious casings like pure vermiculite because they should not contam afterward. A nutritious casing would however, so pasteurization would be right. You are correct. Sorry for the confusion.
