my brf cakes
    #7680021 - 11/25/07 09:52 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have 3 cakes that i left in my FC over the thanksgiving holidays and was away from it for 5 days. When I came back tonight the hydrometer ready like 70%. one of the cakes has like 12 pins and a small shroom growing off of it. One of them was still pretty hydrated and has new mycileum growing on it. The last one was pretty dry and to the point of having a crack on one side.

I birthed 3 other South African cakes and also took the very dry cake and dunked them in a bag with distilled water and h2o2 and a drop of isopropyl alcohol.

What is the chance that the really dry cracked cake will still take water and form pins?
It still clearly had a good amount of white myc all over it, it was just very light and dry.

Also will the pins and small shroom recover?
Because I sprayed the sides down real good with distilled water and the RH is now at 100% again.

Thanx
kF

You should NOT have added neither the peroxide or the alcohol.

Both are damaging to mycelium and will only serve to weaken an already weakened mycelium, opening it even more to contamination.

I really don't understand this fad of adding harmful substances to all water you(not you specifically) use. What is the point? Distilled water can hold no life (at least not life lively enough to do any harm, and the bottle comes sealed and pretty sterile) and tap water comes full of chlorine and has passed through loads of processing, so the life count is pretty low.

In the wild this mycelia would be constantly getting pissed on, shat on, dirty rain water and mud falling on it, etc. Fully colonized substrates are very resistant to contamination.

Peroxide should only be used to kill off cobweb once it has appeared
Alcohol should be used to sanitize surfaces (not needles, they should be flame sterilized as the alcohol can't get inside the needle)

Good luck with your cakes I hope you didn't make too much damage.

You will want to make sure your humidity stays high, If the humidity drops low enough, moisture might be escaping the shrooms faster than can be obtained from the substrate.

Low humidity and lack of moisture within the substrate are the main cause of small fruits

this is all very good information. i will definitly not use any additives to my water when dunking again.

the pins actually look like they are getting bigger today already.

Those look like pretty average size pins, mines were once that size and

As long as the moisture is there they should grow to a decent size ( which i consider about 10 grams to be decent) i usually get a few 10 gram fruits of each flush with a good few 5 gram fruits
