Does Richard D. James trip?
    #7678477 - 11/25/07 03:15 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Richard D. James is also known as Aphex Twin, AFX, Polygon Window, etc.

I was just listening to Analord (a very long series he made of acid house music, pretty minimalist but insane as well) and I'm having a very hard time seeing this guy not having taken a lot of stuff.

Wikipedia and all other sources I can think to check are silent on the matter, however. Does anybody know for sure?

If you look at the track listing for his album Drukqs, all of the titles sound like things you'd say if you were on Salvia and Acid at the same time.

1. "Jynweythek" – 2:14
2. "Vordhosbn" – 4:42
3. "Kladfvgbung Micshk" – 2:00
4. "Omgyjya-Switch7" – 4:46
5. "Strothatynhe" – 2:03
6. "Gwely Mernans" – 5:00
7. "Bbydhyonchord" – 2:21
8. "Cock/Ver10" – 5:17
9. "Avril 14th" – 1:55
10. "Mt Saint Michel + Saint Michaels Mount" – 8:02
11. "Gwarek2" – 6:38
12. "Orban Eq Trx 4" – 1:27
13. "Aussois" – 0:07
14. "Hy A Scullyas Lyf Adhagrow" – 2:09
15. "Kesson Dalef" – 1:18

I'm going with a yes.

I'm pretty sure some(most) of it's Cornish, an old Celtic language:

Nope, I'm just curious as hell. Analord in particular just straight-up sounds like an acid trip to me. Last time I tripped on acid I listened to it on the comedown, and it just made all the visuals I'd been seeing over the past few hours come back in full force because it was like listening to them after I saw them.

And yes, that is Cornish, not psychedelic-induced glossolalia. There are a couple songs names that are made up but they have a reasonable grounding in actual language as well.

Yeah, probably. Songs like "cornish acid", "windowlicker" etc.

"I never wanted to big up any drugs, because I don't reckon they deserve it. It's just something that you choose to do. I probably come across as, like, 'Yeah, acid and weed are amazing.' But I don't think that at all, really. And if I did, I wouldn't want to say it in an interview. Plus, I'm never under the influence of drugs when I make music. Whenever I have been, it's always been totally rubbish. It's a real disciplined thing, making music. When you're tripping, you're just fucked. You could never get it together to make a track. When I'm stoned, I go to bed."

I'm sure he has a good understanding of that world, but like so many great artists, its just a piece of the greater whole and not a mandatory, all-revealing, necessity.

Indeed, thanks for that. I never really knew what James' stance on psychoactives was. Now I do :smile2:

I've always wondered this about many artists. Radiohead, for instance. Something tells me that although their albums are amazing while high or tripping, that they aren't huge drug users.

I'm not sure, I've listened to his stuff while tripping hard and I swear it's almost like MORE stuff is added unto it. I think the music becomes a "portal" to the subtle layers of reality, so it might be intentional, although it could also be mere coincidence. But ask yourself, say he didn't mean it to happen, does it mean the coincidence isn't significant?

True that, but also the windowlicker video shows people becoming him, ego transcendence, psychic harmony, stuff I find hard to believe he didn't trip to embrace.

He never said he didn't like substance use completely, he just sounds like he thinks its no good to the creative process for him personally, that's all. I'm sure he's tripped many a time in his life. But what he said was he can't make music while under the influence, he never said he wasn't inspired by it :smirk:
