Pleurotus nebrodensis (Inzenga) Quelet
    #7296700 - 08/15/07 07:02 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Hi folks,
has anyone here tried cloning/growing this species?
If so, what agar recipe and final substrate?

Pleurotus nebrodensis is merely a large white form of Pleurotus eryngii sometimes called Pleurotus eryngii var. nebrodensis. MEA or PDA works fine, final substrate straw or hardwood sawdust/chips.

It is easily grown and extremely tasty. One of my absolute favorite cultivated mushrooms.

I met a researcher working with this species. IIRC, she used sterilized cottonseedhulls + supp. and used spawnmate.

Thanks peoples.

Ive had some pieces on MYA and on wood(decoction)+dextrose agar for about 10 days with only a bit of fuzz
on the tissue so far, although 1 sample has just started to creep onto the agar(wood+dextrose).

Grey oyster cloned at the same time has all but colonized the the entire plate(90mm).

Should I just be a little more patient?

Sometimes there is a significant lag before a clone takes off. Give it more time. What is the source of your specimens?

I bought them at a market stall specialising in edible mushrooms.
The guy I bought them from said that they were imported fresh from Japan.

I wonder if this mushroom here is nebrodensis? This isolate took a few weeks to even start taking to the medium. But once it got going it colonized at a good speed.

Yeah, that looks like it, at least the commercial version.

Ok, thanks. I'm going to add some colonized agar to a liquid medium and a starter jar right now.

Would the fruiting temperatures be the same as a standard eryngii?

Patience is all I needed after all.
It's growing well now and the transfered wedges(agar to agar) didn't miss a beat!:)
I guess I was just worried that if it didn't grow that I might not get another shot at it as it's not very often available.

Man i'll tell you thing, this species is slow to colonize. I've got it at 70'ish now. 80 wasn't working well.

Well I introduced my project into fruiting conditions a couple of days ago and it has mad pinning. That's @ 55 degrees, 90% relative humidity. But I think I may have blew it. My humidity really got high and coated the surface of the projects with water. It's straight now, but it appears quite a few of the pins may abort. But some are growing well it appears. Hopefully the Ms. will be able to finish them up for me.
