What do think this Alex Grey represents?

The same being that graces the cover of the 10,000 Days album by Tool. Being familiar with a lot of Grey's work, I have always wondered what he is trying to get at with this one. If God is Love then I suspect that he just may be that convenient opposite.

I wouldn't say he is the opposite. I think of him more as some ancient, enigmatic being, not caring or compassionate about the games humans play. Completely objective, with one sole purpose. What is that purpose? Don't know. But certainly very impressive.

I don't think the subject is an individual entity... it seems to me that this painting is an illustration of an interconnective grid that binds all conscious beings together on a higher level than can "actually" be observed visually.
Grey has used the same symbology in several other pieces, often in blazing colors. I think that the darkness of the piece was likely chosen to fit Tool's style in the first place and does not necessarily imply a certain psychological characteristic. I think of it as... night-time at the grid of interconnectivity...

93 It's all about personal interpretation. I've experienced very, very similar territory(especially the red/orange/yellow/blue version of this) by use of ketamine. Grey's earlier geometric grid type paintings have more of a psilocybian flair with obvious reference to the chakras, tol, etc. Grey likely draws inspiration from experiences attained through astral projection, meditation, dreaming, and use of various substances. 93 93/93

my god, that gathering looks full of pseudo hippy wanna-bes. all of them trying to be "deep" but just there to suck off alex grey.
i like the unfinished version of that painting better, when it's not so monochromatic.

yeah as robot said it is the "net of being" "I" think it is a clear and beautifuly ornate discription of the interplay between all sentient life. we are all connected and reflecting the same energy throughout the "net" we contain infinite cosm's both macro and micro containg all that ever was or will be. breat painting i hate that crappy black and white tool version tho. the actual paining is much more alive, its wider and shows much more detail

alex grey often uses those nebulous galexy eyes in his paintings that dipict phychadelic facturing of the ego into the "grid" or net" oversoul, one, and the net of being are all great examples of this. they dipict the raw creative spirite of humanity manifested as a human figure. alex's use of eyes big and small all over his workrepresents all the literal "points" of veiw

Wow, thanks man. Up until now I've only seen the coloured version in fragments and people were blocking most of it (Full Moon Gathering part of Alex Grey's site). I admit it does look better with the rainbow but in all honesty, you could throw lollipops, unicorns and bubblegum into that picture and I'd still just be focused on that expression.

i like that live painting its simple yet potent
 fucking dragons
 earth dance
his live paintings tho lacking in detail are soaked in meaning and expression. i would love to get to see him paint some day
as for more polished works:
 dalai lama portrait
 ohio song
 cosmic elf
and of course the net of being
 here is seraphic transport
i "redid: this or rather re crystalised this peice as i had a vission one day on dmt that was so strikinly similer i had to try and captire it here it is i call it "shared vision"
not nearly as colorful but hey i like pencil
so hard to choose. i could go on forever

the thing about Alex Grey is, he has found a niche that he fits in, and it sells. he isn't moving from that niche. he has been type cast in his formula.
while all of his stuff is extraordinary both in content and technical skill, it still lacks any sense of foresight. all of it seems so planned out that any of his newer stuff I have a hard time getting into.
I want to see him try something new. push the envelope. that's when I really get into an artist; when I can see the risk they took, and succeeded in it. until I see him do that, I will view him as a man who is comfortable where is, but lacks the balls to really be a pioneer to himself and those viewing his work.

I think right now Alex is totally gearing himself up for the next phase of his work and that centers around building the actual Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a large structure whose plans are currently on display at his NYC gallery...building that structure, which looks to be wonderful, and creating a community center around it, is the next phase in his work. And he apparently has a wealth of huge paintings he hasn't displayed yet that are too large for the space his gallery currently occupies..

Weird, just the other day I said "It would be cool if Alex Grey painted someone playing an instrument."
I pictured Jimmy Hendrix with angels flying out of his mouth though...

right on. i didn't know that. i hope he kind of breaks away from his mold with this. granted it sounds like an architectural/communal type of piece, rather than a contextual painting, so it pretty much should break away from his standard. but i have a gut feeling it's just going to be a building stamped with hundreds of his stereotypical paintings.

Figured I would post this....
I found this poster of the work "Net of Being" on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/TOOL-10-000-Days-Tour-Alex-Grey-Poster-NEW-40-X-59_W0QQitemZ170178857924QQihZ007QQcategoryZ53281QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
There is one on Alex Grey's site too, but its like 10x16" but it is signed, and has no TOOL branding.
However, that TOOL/AlexGrey poster is pretty massive at 40"x60"
Figured if anyone was interested in having a print/poster of that pretty great piece I would post it

Regarding the first post, I read an article about the "Net of being" Something about him drinking some sort of Psychedelic in South America and becoming a "Ball of awareness" and was floating through the "Net of being" he depicted in that painting...Sorry if this has already been posted.

If there were no desire to heal The damaged and broken met along This tedious path I've chosen hereI certainly would've walked away by now. And I still may ... (sigh) ... I still may.Be patient. I must keep reminding myself of this.
