indoor/outdoor cyanescen project

So I brought some myc back from Seattle last month and have been keeping it inside to expand all winter. I'm guessing the northern michigan winter would have been hard on the stuff so I decided to play it safe.

It has been spreading well on cardboard and I have been expanding it every week or two. I decided to do an experiment with different types of woodchips and here is what I have discovered.

Oak: It doesn't seem to be taking to the oak chips at all. I don't know if the wood is too dense. Perhaps it is just taking longer because of the density.

Maple: Seems to be working alright with the maple.

Aspen: Cyan myc seems to really dig into these aspen chips. I figured aspen is about as close to alder as I can get locally and it is spreading as well as I could hope.

So are there any other little experiments anyone suggests to expand this myc? I have a few seperate containers now so I can keep one as a control and try things with the other. I wonder if they would like a bit of bird seed to eat, or would that lend to contamination?

I'd keep any grains away from them since you're not using sterile procedure. They like a mix of wood. I've even seen large fruitings on Douglas fir. Make sure you have a few nice sized pieces of wood in there, because they tend to produce the best fruits. Sawdust mixed with a bit of soil will help fill in the gaps around the chips. Try not to keep them too wet, or mold will be a problem. I let mine dry out quite a bit before watering.
