First flush mushrooms are really small
    #7676331 - 11/24/07 10:35 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

What could cause them to be really small?

I used 6 pf cakes, crumbled them with some 50/50 casing w/ hydrated lime and put them in a terrarium w/ perlite and misting for humidity. I had my hydrometer in there and it said 99% humidity so I know that was good. I fanned it 2-4 times a day depending on when I could. Pictures are included below, first one is of them about 4 days ago. Second picture is them after the first flush. Wet weight after first flush was 18 grams :frown:

Any suggestions on what might have caused this would be great.

I disagree lots of teks around here. The optimum humidity for hyphal knot formation and mushroom development is 99%, with plenty of air exchange, regardless of type of grow. I suspect your substrate dried out. If you didn't dunk the cakes before crumbling to case, you would have really had to pour the water to the casing layer to get good sized fruits. Fruit size is related to the moisture content of your substrate.

so if doing a rye 50/50-casing would it be ideal to run a stream of tap water on it about 5 days after putting it in the FC?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did dunk the cakes in the fridge before I crumbled them.

that is usually advise for re-hydrating after a flush.tap water shouldn't be a problem for a fully colonized substrate.

properly prepared,a casing shouldn't need dunking,look up "field capacity".

weigh it by hand, if it "feels" too light, tip a cup or so of water down the side.
the substrate will slowly absorb what it needs.pour excess water off after a couple of hours.
have you checked this->

I complelty agree on this, and have kind of mini tested this on cakes which started drying out while fruiting due to taking a while to pin. I injected water into the cakes and noticed a huge difference in the size of shrooms compared to a cake which i just left as normal.

Mushrooms are 90% water, if they cant get the moisture then they wont get big, its not just humidity thats required but also enough water within the substrate. The humid enviroment not only provides mushrooms extra moisture but stops the mushrooms drying out.

Well I am picking the mushrooms right after the viels break. After this flush finishes I will spray the hell out of it with water to try and remedy it for the next flush. Or I suppose I could inject some water into the substrate, I will have to search some and figure out what I need to do for that.

For casings you would be better soaking the substate rather than injecting.

Its kinda similar to d unking cakes, never done casings so not quite to sure how you dunk a casing :smile:
