Looks like there's fibers on the cap so possibly. We need more info about the mushroom if you want to know if it's gymnopilus, and even more to know if it's spectabillis.

What was it growing on? Where do you live, and what was the weather like when you found it? Could you post more pictures of the mushroom, from different angles?

You really need to post a proper ID request next time. I can tell you just by looking at that bottom pic that it is not gym spec.

Hi I am owl100s partner. He finally figured out how to post our pics for me as I am way more mushroom inclined than computer savvy.
About these pics: Location Northwest the big O. Large field where there has been Timothy grass hay, various burn piles and my garden. Found these frozen surrounding and growing out of an old stump. All seem mature and very Large. Rusty Orange in color, cap and stem. Caps Plane and uplifted now with maturity. Flat on the top like a pancake. No real umbonate; As far as the Gill attachment its adnexed? Gills Rusty orange and brown towards the base. Gills are "full" crowded; Stem is long firm and solid. Our specimens were so frozen so we looked up the best way to dry them on your site, thank you, we are still working on a better spore print. It looks so far to be rusty orange in deposit. What do you think?

Looking at those new pics and considering a rusty spore print im tempted to say that there is some chance that they are gyms. Its a really tough call though...do any of them have ring remnants on the stalks?... i dont know if they would still maintain the "gym odor" after freezing, but if they are gyms they will have a sweet/spicy smell...most call it anise-like. I really cant recommend eating them...if you get a rust/orange spore print, and they have a smell that seems like what i described than there is a chance.

they where around the stump, growing in the stump or to the side , could be cortinarius or gymnopilus, some spores are seiing in caps, they will not produce more for dehydratation , and will rot for the change of temperature that xplode the water inside every cell that froze . very carefull i will not recomed to eat it even if is a gymnopilus.

I have very little personal experience with Gymnopilus, although I've found a few and have viewed many on this forum.

However, if your specimen is truly growing from dead wood and has a rusty-orange spore print, then it is almost certainly from the family Cortinariaceae and the Genus Gymnopilus.   Rusty-brown is a different story.

Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.  My ideas should not be taken as an identification.

You should never eat a mushroom unless you are 100% certain of the identification!

thats a good point, i hadnt seen/noticed that. gyms always have an off-orange spore print. maybe you could post a pic so we can see?

word  scout24 , :sun:if is growin in a tree is a gym for sure or a galerina but  the size and shape can let gymnopilus call atention.
there is also onphalus  with some how similar spore colors  but the shape rule out  but you have to recognice al the shape and diferences taste ,smell, in my experience the range of spore color of gymnopilus species can vary fron rusty orange to rysty - brown sometimes depends in the especie and the thick the spores print  is..
all my best vibration

Hey thanks this is great we should have done this a long time ago, I have so many pictures of so many specimens I would like clarification on but before I get too excited here, let me show you what best we got of the spore print for this possible Gym, and what the inside of the stalk looks like when I sliced it open. Also the Stalks all had remnants of annular ring on them. They were just so large!

Its looking more and more like a gym to me. does it have the odor? also...im not recommending it, but you could probably get a good idea of whether or not its a gym by doing a very very small taste test. if its biter as hell it has yet another sign pointing to gym. if you do the taste test make sure you spit everything out, rinse thoroughly etc... again, i dont recommend it, and If i were to do the taste test I would only do so if it had the aforementioned odor. Sadly, its just too risky ingesting anything that hast gotten a 100% ID. Im really not so sure you will be able to get that on these mushrooms, as anything past prime condition isnt necessarily showing signs of its true form. I spent a very long time looking for gyms before I actually found them. I cant tell you how many times I found look-alikes and got all stoked but passed them up once I brought them home and didnt feel right about my ID. Once I finally found them i realized that there is absolutely NO mistaking it when youve found the real thing...big as hell, unmistakable odor, drop so many spores you could use them as paint, and of course the bitterness that puts chewing on pharmaceuticals to shame!

It has a very strong odor. Mushroomy I would have to say. Earthy. Someone said a while back anise like, I don't know about that, definately earthy and strong. I am reluctant like you say to ingest one until I am sure I love my liver and my brain and my life...so I am cautious, especially when it comes to only moderately active and possibly past their prime. The freezing probably altered the chemistry at somepoint but I am not certain at what point if any and or if it effects the activity. I do like to know though anyhow which one is what. Yeah I hear the bitter! The spores hard to tell because they were so wet. Looked like it could be alot. They had a lot of liquid inside the fibrous massive orange stalks. Anyway, thanks again. I will go ahead and finish drying and then bag then like I do the others and wait for positive I.D. Combining all the pictures, information gathered and researched together for later reference. That is the way to do it I suppose. Sometimes deferred gratification can be a bit tedious, and again, I love my life...so much to explore out there still and in my head!

That print look brown to me - true color?

I'm not clear, was the taste bitter?  It's not risky if you don't swallow.

I didn't taste it. If it is Gym it probably won't kill me to taste it, however, simply putting or tasting any mshrm inside the oral mucosa high absorption, therefore risk, you don't have to swallow.;)
The spore print might not be true color because of the water it was retaining with it.  So don't know for sure.

The question of whether tasting a mushroom and then spitting it out is dangerous has been discussed on these boards. The majority believe it is not dangerous. Many people, including some on this board, have tasted deadly species like Amanita phalloides, the death cap, with no ill effect.

Generally, taste is not a good identifier. However, it's an excellent identifier in some genera, like Gymnopilus.

Regarding 'true color', I meant does the photograph represent the true color of the actual print?

reading this thread makes me nervous. it seems pretty doubtful. They were frozen, and doesnt that mean that if they were gyms that they would be bruised and green all over from the ice tearing the cells?

Why nervous? He has been told not to eat the mushroom and he doesn't seem inclined to ignore that advice.

Most Gyms do not bruise blue/green at all.
