colonization trouble
    #7674929 - 11/24/07 03:19 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

it's my first time growing mush and i'm having difficulty with the colonization. i still have nothing after 9 days. i have brown rice and verm in half pint jars and i put them in a small cardboard box after inoculation to keep out light but perhaps its not getting enough gas exchange. also i didnt think they were warm enough so i put the box on a heating pad on low. if the heat is too much will it burn or dry out my substrate? is so can i add moisture?

might be the cold temps
i doubt gas exchange would be a problem as there isn't even visible growth yet

DONT ADD ADDITIONAL MOISTURE!
this might leave your jars open to contam!

and no the heat will not burn or dry out your substrate

Good Luck!

thanks for the reply:) i have had the jars in a box and on a heating pad for a week now. still nothing, but it does looks as if there is still moisture. also my needle tip barely reached the inside of the sbstrate. i think ive got more like an inch of barrier. the spores hit the substrate but just barely. that shouldn't make a difference right? these are ecu cubens. i figured maybe this much colnization time sound average?

In my opinion heat will dry them out if there is sufficient heat to do so. I suggest you make sure you are not applying too much heat to them. Get a temperature gauge and investigate further.

Make sure it's not above 86 degrees. Or it will kill the spores. Also make sure that the heat is distributed and not all in one spot. For some reason it always takes my Ecuadors a bit longer to colonize my jars.

i figured it out. i killed the spores upon inoculation when i had only let the substrate cool for like 20 minutes. i knew it was still somewhat warm but thought it would be ok. nope. lesson learned. the good news is i started some more jars of PESA and they are looking good! there was a big difference in the syringe i used after making my own from a print and the syringe i got via mail. the color on my own was much more dense looking, but i used one prnt to one syringe. i was afraid i was using too many spores but i couldnt find anything about the ratio on the shroomery. anyway its been 5 days and i've gotten a great start (bigger than quarter size mycelium growth at the inoc points.) of course i let the jars cool for about 12 hours beforehand this time. things are looking up!
