well, it seems like your laptop is gonna be pimpin, particularly the 512mb nvidia 8600gt (is that discrete memory or shared?) - i can tell you flat up that virtually all on board graphics card are absolute trash in Vista (particularly w/ WoW) but that seems really hot man and I'd say it's worth a shot trying out Vista. Are you asking because you have the opportunity to downgrade now to XP and save money, or do you have your own copy of XP that you can put on should Vista not fit the bill? vista will use up more of your resources but it seems like you're gonna have plenty of resources to play around w/... i'd try out Vista, am running it myself on a quad core and it runs absolutely flawless w/ wow and oblivion w/ myriads of other programs running, though those are the only games i play.

either way, gratz on the laptop, /jealous kek

Make certain that you have drivers for all your hardware. Nothing sucks worse than needing an ethernet driver to get online, but needing to get online to download the ethernet driver.

The biggest problem I have seen is Microsoft strong arming hardware manufacturers into not releasing XP drivers for their new hardware; especially on laptops. Often, you simply cannot find XP compatible drivers for computers that carry the vista ready logo.

truly! have dealt w/ that one in the past on more than one occasion w/ onboard ethernet and graphics drivers particularly. go to the laptop's website and type in the model #, if they don't offer xp drivers at least write down the names of all the drivers/look in your control panel/system/device manager and write em down and try searching for the drivers on google or places like nvidia, my last several boards sound have been realtek for example and i know they have a website.... burn all of that to a cd. g'luck man.

It's DUAL (2x) NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT in SLi.

Quote:

512MB GDDR3 discrete graphics memory, plus up to 255MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using NVIDIA TurboCache technology.

So 767mb of potential memory. Yeah it will be pimpin.

I have an XP disc that I can use.. but I am seriously dreading using Vista based on all the bad shit I've heard about it. Like, I know it will RUN my games.. but I am always after the top performance, especially since I like to run everything on the highest video settings and often use fraps to record shit while playing.. that cuts down frame rates by a lot. I will give Vista a try.. since it comes pre-installed.. but if Vista is hogging resources then it's getting the boot with the quickness.

But I am having a hell of a time finding the right XP drivers though.. especially the SATA drivers. I'm like going in endless loops and clusterfucks looking for this shit.. ugh. This is confusing as fuck. I'm hoping someone on this laptop forum will just send me all the right drivers.

yeah, for a laptop that is down right sick. heh, ya know, whatever the thinker thinks the prover proves, ya might not like vista... i tend to dislike pre-installed OSes, tend to have lots of extra BS software loaded bogging em down, so i'd clean out all the junk you never intend to use, looking at the active processes in the task manager would help. but, can't deny the appeal of the clean install you'd get out of your xp disc.

have never used fraps but have been amused by the notion of frapsing some naked arenas and sending lol@yous to the realm forums, heh.

hmmm, i really can't imagine that XP won't detect your hard drive... can you list its specifics? maybe i can poke around a little for you.

> I think the only games that require DX10 are Halo 2 and Shadowrun, and both of those are easily cracked to run on XP and DX9.

Halo 2 is produced by Microsoft, and Shadowrun is produced by... Microsoft (FASA Interactive was purchased by Microsoft in 1999). Funny how the only games that require DX10 are owned by Microsoft and can be hacked to use DX9. This shows that Microsoft is actively using their other markets to try and force consumers in their monopoly to purchase newer products.

I never had to install drivers for my SATA drives, neither under linux or windows 2000 (xp is pretty much the same, just looks nicer).

Ditch Vista, unless you like being fucked over.

If you're not running linux, a good way of finding out what hardware your system has is AIDA32

I have a gateway...the xp drivers simply aren't available through gateway support website.  After searching around, I found everything, but I cannot get/find the audio driver for XP.  :frown:

Fuckers

eh.  I'm dual booted right now, Ubuntu/Vista.  Audio only works in Vista.

Which sound card does your comp have, and do you need drivers for Windows or Linux?

Ok, this is about to drive me insane.

I've gone through about 10 wasted CDs by making various slipstream installl discs and none of them have worked. I've spent a ton of time downloading the proper XP drivers.. and only on the last disc I made was I able to get past the "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message. Well great.. awesome.. I got past that finally with the right drivers. But then got plastered with a new one:

"Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD".

Fuck.
So I'm down to my last disc. And I'm not sure what the hell I'm doing wrong. I pulled all the files directly off a Windows XP SP2 disc, included most? of the security fixes, and just used nlite to slip in all the drivers I need. But damn this is frustrating.

I hate Vista BTW. It's all Eye Candy bullshit. It's a MAJOR resource hog. Shit is slow as hell booting up and shutting down. Sometimes programs stall and take forever to load, which is inexcusable on a brand new machine with these specs. What a piece of shit OS.

Ok so I just downloaded XP pro corporate SP2 by Etho... supposedly with all the patches integrated and whatnot. Slipstreaming all my drivers in it now... down to my last disc... hopefully this works

Vista sucks.

I work in IT, and deal with it everyday.

Trying to downgrade toshiba laptops is a PITA. They don't support xp drivers on newer models.

and Vista is a Memory hoggie!

(anybody heard of Microsoft Surface?)
