Vista vs XP

So I'm getting a new laptop, 2.0ghz core 2 duo, 512mb Nvidia 8600GT in SLI, 2GB ram. But it comes with Vista.
I've heard a lot of bad things about Vista.. mostly that is hogs a lot more resources then XP. Anyone here have any experience with Vista vs XP and can comment? Specifically for high end gaming like UT3, Quake Wars, WoW, etc. Would I be better off installing XP?
I don't mind doing a lot of tweaks if I can get good performance out of Vista.. although I'd prefer to avoid as many headaches as possible and XP has been reliable for me for many years. but what would be better?

My new laptop has Vista, and I'd much rather it have XP. There really aren't that many features that make vista any better imo, and I'm used to using xp. Familiarity is the main reason I'd rather have xp though.
Edit: And yeah, vista is kinda laggy sometimes but I don't know if it would be any different with XP as I havn't installed it on here yet, but I can play Guild Wars with decent graphics settings without any lag.

Got Vista on the laptop, it's bloody awful.
Go for XP. Especially for those games.

I like Vista, but yeah - it really needs fast computer with lots of memory to handle it properly.
If all you want is to play video games, then XP will do nicely, with lots of memory too. I think 2 GB is sufficient for this. Some games have issues with Vista, so for you, XP is the way to go.
Make sure you have the original installation disks for everything that was installed on your laptop before you start erasing stuff or formatting drives.

you computer will run vista without a hassle. i installed vista ultimate on my pc (1.66 core 2 duo and 2gigs ram) and it ran perfectly. i actually liked vista very much, it looked pretty and had a lot of features that i liked (especially the search feature, it's awesome on vista). but i hated the UAC bitching constantly so i disabled it and everything was cool.
i wouldn't know much about how games will be affected but i would think that with your rig vista or xp wouldn't make much of a difference, but then again i'm not really a gamer. i never installed any games on vista.
right now i'm dual booting XP MCE and Kubuntu gutsy, but i'm thinking of wiping out my hard driva and dual booting vista ultimate and some kind of linux distro.

i havnt had any problems at all with vista and am very happy with it, however if you like games, go for xp, especially with SP3 coming out soon, taking many elements from vista.
definitely go for xp if you have any doubts.

Question about installing XP and deleting Vista if I choose to go that route.. I've read a few things about people having major problems getting XP to install on a machine with vista especially in regards to it recognizing SATA hard drives. What steps should I take in advance to prepare for such problems to make installation of XP as pain free as possible?

Make certain that you have drivers for all your hardware. Nothing sucks worse than needing an ethernet driver to get online, but needing to get online to download the ethernet driver.
The biggest problem I have seen is Microsoft strong arming hardware manufacturers into not releasing XP drivers for their new hardware; especially on laptops. Often, you simply cannot find XP compatible drivers for computers that carry the vista ready logo.

i installed xp on a friends vista laptop, and i could find working drivers for everything other than the onboard wireless. My buddy didn't care as his gas line mapping device was only compatible with xp...so we just got a wireless pcmcia card and installed that, and it was good as new...i haven't checked if they have come out with a xp driver for the onboard yet....

What you need is Mac OSX Leopard. It takes a big steaming shit on any of the windows OS.

Vista is friggin horrible man. My dad has it on his system with a quad core extreme edition and 4GB of RAM. It runs slower than my laptop with a single 1.8GHz core and 1GB. I highly recommend replacing it with XP. If your laptop has SATA drives you'll need to provide the drivers for the SATA controller during setup. If your laptop has a floppy drive, no problem. Press F5 when prompted and load them off a disk. Otherwise you'll need to make a custom install CD with the drivers already included. That's pretty easy using nLite. As far as I know the only worthwhile DX10 card for laptops is the brand new GeForce 8700M and unless you have one of those you won't be missing anything by going with XP. Even if you do have one, DX10 support isn't a good enough reason to run Vista IMHO. I think the only games that require DX10 are Halo 2 and Shadowrun, and both of those are easily cracked to run on XP and DX9.
Also XP SP3 is coming out in 2008 and it should breathe new life into the OS. I think XP should be good well into the next decade, after which Ubuntu will be ready to take over.

Sadly, this is true ... I have Vista 64-bit because it has security that XP doesn't have. I still need to maintain XP for things which just won't work under Vista. Give it another year before Microsoft figures out what they are doing ...

Yeah, I have no need for DX10.. the games I play don't even use it anyway. I did already download nlite, just a little confused as to how to make a custom install CD with it. Gonna have to do some more reading. Like should I put the drivers on a separate disc or somehow include them on the windows install disc with nlite? Is there a way I can download all the right drivers before my laptop even gets here? This is the system I got btw -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114399
Nevermind I'm dumb.. found the drivers. Toshiba has like 5 drivers listed for XP for that model
