Australian Election Outcome...
    #7673647 - 11/24/07 06:32 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hey there - anyone paying attention to the Australian elections at the moment? I guess not, for the most part.

Well, we just got handed [through the 'wise' judgement of the public] a Labour government. Great... and most people just don't know why it isnt great. Well, nuts to them. Damn students around me at university dont even know about politics and yest they are ragging on me for my opinions!

Well, here are the facts: [not all, but the ones I know about]
1) Labour traditionally implements a greater amount of social policy aimed at welfare systems.
2) Discretion will be given to the federal governments as to where funding goes within the state - which means a disproportionate amount goes into metropolitan centres...which don't need the most development.
3) Federal governments shall for the first time in decades be solely labour, as well as labour having a big majority in the Senate.
4) Programs focussing on wind generation will be started.

My big gripe is that although the implementation of increased welfare policies is good to see for those that rely on them, this is exactly the point: they come to rely on an ever-increasing system of welfare. I'm not saying everyone out there who recieves a benefit is a moocher, but some people certainly come to rely on the system instead of making an honest living. The increased welfare system makes for a larger burden of tax upon the society as a whole: and a large amount of this burden goes to the wealthy. You think you know about being taxed in America? Come here - try the following:

$0 – $6,000
Nil

$6,001 – $25,000
15c for each $1 over $6,000

$25,001 – $75,000
$2,850 plus 30c for each $1 over $25,000

$75,001 – $150,000
$17,850 plus 40c for each $1 over $75,000

$150,001 and over
$47,850 plus 45c for each $1 over $150,000

And thats going to go up, in all likelihood. GET LOST! Essentially, the government will try and redistribute wealth. Great, if its going to achieve something. Well, theres the rub. Traditional welfare systems as applied in this country and others in the Western world tend to be highly ineffective & inefficient. In addition, they tend to make a reserve pool of labour from which people can be suitably plucked at whim by the capital class or the military in times of crisis. Sounding convenient? Well, it is for the government.

So what you might ask? A bit more tax, and a few more policies...doesn't sound that bad right? Well, you're wrong. Because a side effect of all this government spending and higher taxation leads to higher inflation...which leads to ordinary citizens of the lower classes being robbed of necessities and becoming more heavily reliant on welfare. Now all we need is a good push by the international economy in regards to the price of oil and global trends...and we may have a major recession on our hands. BANG. Hear that? That was Australia just shooting itself in the foot.

Adding fuel to the fire is the research into wind generation. What, economically viable? Zero-pollution? Cool spinny-things? WOW! Sounds neat!

Until you get to the actual facts and figures: Wind generation is possibly one of the most inefficient possible methods of mass power generation on a macro scale. In the first instance very few places are viable for initiating a wind-turbine scheme, and this land is generally already in use for primary production. Secondly, the amount of down-time in terms of maintenance and suitability of wind strength [even in the best suited of places] means that the turbines run for sub-optimal periods of time becasue wind generation cannot take place with winds that are too low, high, of inconsistent duration or direction, or when the turbine is being repaired. Power delivery also comes at off-peak hours, requiring large storage facilities. These reasons, as well as the monumental cost of initially designing, building, levelling and maintaining wind generation systems make them seem somewhat troublesome. Solar power perhaps? It has the problem of needing sun - again, which is not available in peak hours. Also, the sunniest areas on Earth happen to be the driest, and solar generation on a large scale requires huge amounts of water to keep the panels operating at optimal efficiency by keeping them clean. Oh and transportation, staffing, and maintenance at these remote and waterless areas will cost a fortune.

Gee, looking great Mr Prime Minister Kevin Rudd!

Hopefully Mr Rudd will break the mould of those that have gone before him: I sorely hope so, for the good of our nation and those within it.

Cheers all - boingkster. [/rant]

'Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they're wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It's all in how you carry it. That's what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you're letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain and leave the Shroomery.' ~ Jim Morrison
