Born at the Wrong Time
    #7672820 - 11/23/07 10:38 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I often feel like I was just born in the wrong era. I'm a drug user, but the energy of the counterculture has become so negative in the 21st Century. I missed the blossoming of our beautiful subculture in the '60s and the days of Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect in the '90s. These days it's rarely about enlightenment, understanding, or a bond with others. Its about doing whatever you can to get that little buzz, whether it be huffing sewage or smoking banana peals. I fear for a world in which those drugs which brought our parents enlightenment have given way to meth-amphetamine and the like. I am on the verge of heading off to college, but there is a part of me who thinks that this isn't what's good for me or the world. After reading all of Chinacat72's posts, I have considered just going on the road and finding the people who I know are still out there who see the problems of the world and want to find a solution. I don't know how realistic the idea is, having to prepare for college, but I am considering going to Bonnaroo this summer, then I'll load up the car and head west. I want to attend the Oregon County Fair and meet members of the family that I have read so much about. I'm far from a hippy right now, but often times it seems like the right life to live.

Oh jesus, just because you use drugs doesn't mean you were born in the wrong era. People have used drugs since the beginning, and we'll still be using them in the end. Forever.

Wait a few more years, you'll find your place. You'll realize that satisfaction won't be found out on the "road" or in Oregon or wherever you think it is that happy hippie people are.

the hippy era was a pathetic attempt at people trying to be "deep". they were just bums who didn't want to work for anything. don't quit your day job.

I don't know what's up with people and bashing hippies. Hippies were damn hard working. You think it's fucking easy being a hippie? Think again. Just because they weren't doing physical labor, doesn't mean they weren't contributing a fuck ton to the world. If it weren't for hippies, girls could potentially still be kicked out of school for wearing pants. Like it or not, hippies were probably amongst the first modern people to renounce the American dream, a huge step away from a dull and meaningless life.

As a psychedelic user, you should at least acknowledge that there's more to existence than just a bunch of atoms in an elaborate clusterfuck. Otherwise, I suggest you DO MORE GODDAMN DRUGS.

Dude, that was only like 50 years ago or so. That's a minuscule amount of time. If you look at culture as a liquid, the more hippie you add the more hippie-esque it is as a whole. Same works for everything. Maybe not as drastic as that, but shit dude... we'd be a step behind in my opinion.

To add to that, without hippies, you probably wouldn't be here right now, because psychedelics wouldn't have seeped into North America. Ingrates.

So you're saying without hippies there wouldn't have been psychedelics in America?
I'm going to go ahead and disagree, and say the inverse is true.

I'm not saying there wouldn't have been, they just wouldn't have been prominent and you might not have even considered them. LSD might not have escaped the confines of the lab, as it is a difficult substance to produce. You have to admit that there was a significant dedication on the part of hippies to spread the love, make it known. Shit, many shroomerites do that, even if they don't consider themselves hippies.

Now you're just speculating.
In general I'm not as anti-60's hippie movement as I may seem on these boards, but they sure as fuck weren't any heroes of mine. I'm fairly confident any drug they made prominent during their time would have inevitably been popular eventually, and by eventually I mean before I was 18 (which was not too long ago.)

Hippie is just label, amphetamines were huge in the 60s, there's always been problems with irresponsible use of any and all substances. The jam scene is huge everywhere, but if you've got the wunderlust, then by all means, hit the road. Peace is where you make it! Right now is a freakin' awesome time to be alive, check this out:

That's beside the point of my post. Credit is due. Hippies made it known. Sure, any chemist could have discovered LSD. But Albert Hoffman did. And because of that, he's Albert fucking Hoffman. If it wouldn't have been him, it would have been someone else.

If drugs would have been popular as fast as they did, it'd have to happen through a cultural movement of some sort. Otherwise it wouldn't be popular. That's how it happened, and that culture is the hippie culture. Drugs are a product of the hippie culture and the hippie culture is a product of the drug. It's a catch 22 of sorts.

Hippies are the ones who give you a free ounce of mushrooms, or that killer ten-strip for 30 bucks. They're a strong ally in the drug culture. Imagine scoring acid if hippies didn't exist, it's already tough enough. And even if you don't like their ideals, at least they're trying something different than playing into the obviously faulty way of life that is expected of the modern populace.

I'm not telling people to be hippies, I'm just saying that there's a lot more to it than being a lazy, dirty unemployed burnout. They play their role, big or small, whether you like it or not and it irritates me when people can't at least acknowledge that. /rant

Yeah I agree that counter-culture is heading in the wrong direction.

I accredit that to our various governments efforts to quash what little good there is in the world.

However, I do believe, we've gone past the tipping point. Our collective consciousness is sour.. theres too much hatred, jealousy and immorality...

Fear is a too powerful thing these days :frown:

I commend you for your aspirations.  However, I think the goals you have in mind can come from working with people in general.  That said, pick a college major that has potential in a post-apocolyptic world if you have a negative outlook
