Flies on poppy plants??
    #7672817 - 11/23/07 10:36 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have been growing a few poppy plants inside since middle of September. They are coming along ok, perhaps a little slow but they are growing. I have noticed what appears to be fruit flies around the plants. They like to sit on the leaves and whatnot, however the plants themselves do not seem effected. Some of the bottom leaves have turned yellow and fallen off, but I read here that it is to be expected. As of today put some traps around consisting of bottles with sugary liquids inside with tiny holes, I will also go out and buy some apple cider vinegar and honey after the weekend. Basically what I would like to know is what possible contamination can these tiny bugs cause? I do live near a swamp I gather that there are also mold spores in the air and indeed I also noticed a slight white covering on the top of the soil. I solved this with a light water / baking soda spray a 2 weeks ago and it has not returned. Any advice is welcome. Also I know they have been growing slower then usual, is it possible for them to grow a little longer and end up flowering?

sounds like fungus gnats, their larvae live in the top layer of the soil, they eat fungal and organic matter, including roots.
they wont cause a great deal of harm to larger plants, its only usualy seedlings that are in danger of having their roots eaten away.

maybe u are keeping the soil over moist, let it dry out between waterings and perhaps put a layer of diatomaceous earth on the surface, that will kill the larvae... try those sticky fly traps to catch the adult flies also.
