Considering what passes as independent and intelligent among American women you probably wouldn't be in a situation any worse than the rest of us.

a kid in one of my classes knows a fella that's a retired army ranger that lives in the jungle of hawaii. He basically built a hut near a cliff with a view of the ocean. He's away from civilization but has running water and that's all he pays for... He piped some pvc from a local's water supply and pays him every month. Aside from that he's essentially free.

I think you should try if if you think you'd like it. It's really hard to feed yourself and shelter yourself with no help. It would definitely be an experience, whether it worked out or not.

In any case, read Walden by Henry David Thoreau. It will either inspire or discourage you.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

QFT

I don't know if eating "shrubs" would really be a good idea.

Besides, think a good long while about exactly how "free" you want to be. You'd not only be free of society, but free of culture. No art, no books, no updates on science, the world's religions, etc. No music. I'm also interested in a somewhat solitary life, but I would never want to completely disconnect from the outside world. It would be maddening - plus - some people are ok.

I did, actually. During the summer months. I would have kept going, but the winters would just be too unbearable for me.

It was an experience that words can hardly conjure up.
I say give it a go

Absolutely. Somewhat related:

Towards the end of my junior year when I had to "decide what to do after high school", and my guidance counselor asked me what I wanted to do with my life, I told her that I wanted to build a community in a third world country where people bartered instead of using currency. Everyone would be dependent on each other for food and shelter and clothing, and everyone would do something specialized to help everyone else.

She told me to join the Quakers or the Amish.

Thats all I've thought about actually for the past few months. All I can think about is how I want to get away from all this bullshit and actually live life. If I lose my scholarship this semester then I'll probably be doing something like that, but i'd probably be looking for secluded communities. Solo wouldn't work too well with me.

Yeah I do want to do it for a while. Maybe hike the Appalachian or something. Thats another thing I really want to do is backpack. I've been camping thousands of times but I've never actually backpacked. I think thats something I would really enjoy doing solo.

But yeah, a small secluded commune type deal is what I've been thinking lately. Or going down to the gulf and living in my car off the beach for a while. All I know is that if I lose my scholarship I won't be sticking around here. College is really the only thing I'm staying back for right now.

I think about it all the time.  Me and a few friends have been throwing the idea of a commune back and forth for a little while.

I don't very much enjoy the society I live in.  I would rather be free and enjoy life on my own terms.

I say go for it...and let me know what happens someday down the road.

I wouldn't wanna do it forever but it'd be great to spend part of my life that way.

I spent 3 months in Mongolia living simple (compared to how things are now), left drugs and everything behind.
The mental clarity i had when i came home was awesome. I had never felt more mentally and physically fit.

Within a week of arriving, my group and i (i didn't know anyone well in the group before i got there) had to start our first phase which was a two and a half week trek across the Gobi desert.
We'd barely started and it was strange how many people (me included) were having these bad patches, crying and feeling really low for no apparent reason.

The majority of us went through this weird stage at some point, though some had it worse than others..

I think it happens because when you're out somewhere like that, even though there's people around, all you have is you and for once you have to face yourself.
You're free from all the usual bullshit distractions, and when the effects of that started catching up with people it tended to send them into a depression...

People rarely truly face themselves here. I think it's almost impossible these days with all the crap we have cluttering up our lives, but i reckon it's important if we wanna be content.
The clutter is our fault to an extent since we fill our lives with distractions, using them without even thinking because it's the norm, and it's easier than facing a current or underlying issue head on for any longer than we have too.

It's never fulfilling enough though and i don't think it ever will be.

Having seen people go through this depressed stage then having to bounce back, it looks like people are carrying around too much background stress all the time without even realizing.
An accumulation of things that have happened to us, things you haven't thought over properly, or thought about for long enough with the clarity that's needed to resolve them on a deeper level.

I think that's why when this acute depression hits it's impossible to pin down to any single issue, and you're left with this feeling that you're having to face yourself.

Maybe the distractions and peoples habit of avoiding problems/not tackling them properly is causing a lot of frustration and discontent in the long run.
The need for escape and peace is really the need to find our roots because we know things have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Wow i'm hammered and babbling too much,,  it must be my bedtime,,

:bye:
